Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer) is one of the most beloved Venetian celebrations, held every year in Venice, in the third weekend of July. In 1576, the Venetian Senate decided to build a church dedicated to Jesus the Redeemer (Il Redentore), hoping to get rid of the disease. A year later, in July, the city was declared cured, and the Venetians initiated a new celebration called Festa del Redentore. Today, the feast takes place in the third weekend of July and, on this occasion, a bridge is built across the Giudecca Canal, between Zattere and the Giudecca Island, that people cross in a short pilgrimage to the church built Read more [...]

Festa del Santissimo Salvatore della Trasfigurazione (Feast of the Most Holy Savior of the Transfiguration) is a religious feast held every year in Cefalù, between 2 and 6 August, dedicated to the patron saint of the city. During these five days, farmers, who have just finished the harvest, find themselves resting and rejoicing.   SHORT HISTORY The Transfiguration is a moment in the New Testament, when the Christ and three of his apostles, Peter, James and John, go to a mountain, and the Son of God becomes radiant in glory, shining with bright rays of light. In the Eastern world, the festivity of the Transfiguration is to be traced back to the fourth century, when Empress Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, built the Church of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, in Israel. In Sicily, the Transfiguration is celebrated starting with the 12th century, and is closely linked to the Rogerian period. On this occasion, a procession of boats is held in the morning, from Camogli to Punta Chiappa, located a few kilometers to the south, at the foot of Portofino Mountain. Festa della Madonna Bianca (Feast of the White Madonna) is a religious feast which takes place every year on August 17, in Portovenere, in honor of the White Madonna, the patron saint of the village.   SHORT HISTORY The celebration recalls the miracle of 1399, when, during the French occupation, the seaside village of Portovenere was struck by plague.
