    Festa della Sensa 2019

    Date: 1 June 2019 - 2 June 2019

Festa della Sensa (Feast of the Ascension) is certainly one of the most evocative Venetian traditions, recalling important moments in the history of the Serenissima, through the ceremony of the Marriage of the Sea (Sposalizio del Mare) and the various regattas that takes place, on this occasion, in the Lagoon. Festa della Sensa is, without doubt, one of the most anticipated and appreciated events of the Venetian calendar, not only by tourists, but also by the inhabitants of the city.   SHORT HISTORY The feast was born on the day of the Ascension of Christ, to commemorate two very important moments in the history of Venice. The first event occurred on May 9, in the year 1000, when Doge Pietro Orseolo defeated the Slavs who threatened Dalmatia, allowing Venice to become, starting with that moment, the absolute power of the Adriatic Sea. The second event recalls the peace treaty signed in Venice in 1177, between the Doge Sebastiano Ziani, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and Pope Alessandro III, which marked the end of the centuries-old conflict between the Empire and the Papacy. On this occasion, the Doge received gifts from the Pope and, at the same time, the recognition of Venice as Read more [...]

Perugia 1416 is a historical reenactment event held since 2016 in Perugia, in the second weekend of June, inspired by Braccio Fortebraccio and by one of the most luminous period in the local history. The reenactment is centred on the historic figure of Braccio da Montone, also known as Braccio Fortebraccio, extraordinary and complex protagonist of the city’s history, in a moment full of deep changes, between the 14th and the 15th century. Braccio Fortebraccio was Governor of Bologna, Rector of Rome, Lord of Perugia, Prince of Capua, Count of Montone and Count of Foggia. He was very close to establish a central Italian state in the 15th century. Perugia 1416 represents a competition that takes place between the Five Districts of the city (Porta Santa Susanna, Porta Sole, Porta Eburnea, Porta Sant’Angelo, Porta San Pietro), which will face each other in various challenges to win the Palio. The festival started from the will of rediscovering, symbolically, a fruitful period of the city’s history, and to enhance curiosity, knowledge and sharing. Vogalonga 2019

    Date: 9 June 2019

Vogalonga is one of the most beloved Venetian holidays, held every year in the second half of May or even in early June. Both a non-competitive boat race and a manifest against motor-powered boats that pollute the lagoon, Vogalonga gathers in Venice thousands of participants each year. Vogalonga is practically a race of paddle boats, running around the islands of the lagoon, over a distance of about 30 kilometers. This marathon of non-motorized boats does not have winners, or if you want, winners are all those who participate. Because the race does not limit the participation of anyone, Vogalonga offers an opportunity for both the locals and people from other parts of Italy, and even for participants from around the world.   SHORT HISTORY In 1974, a group of friends started to organize a small race in the waters of the Venetian lagoon. Among them, perhaps the most fervent promoter of the event was Lauro Bergamo, who was at the time the director of Il Gazzettino newspaper. The first Vogalonga took place on May 8, 1975, the day of the Festa della Sensa, when the race started in front of the Palazzo Ducale, on a signal given by a cannon-shot. Read more [...]

    Fruottula 2019

    Date: 22 June 2019

Time: 5:00 pm to 12:00 am

Fruottula is one of the oldest popular traditions in Cefalù, a profane procession that takes place every year on the Saturday before the Feast of Corpus Christi (Corpus Domini). Fruottula, which is also called The Feast of Bread, was, in ancient times, an integral part of the Feast of Corpus Domini. On that occasion, the peasants wore a suit that distinguished them, women with black dresses and white gloves, and men with shirts and black bowler hats. In the Sicilian vocabulary, the word fruottula is a term that indicates a poem composed to be put on music. In particular, in Cefalù, fruottula has always indicated a sang poem consisting of three verses. This composition, sung by a soloist or a choir, sometimes treated profane themes, often satirical and irreverent, but in almost all cases carried out religious themes, telling the lives of the saints or exalting the glory of the Lord. In Sicily, the fruottula was performed on the parade and found a place in religious processions, even in those dedicated to the city’s Patron, as we find in Cefalù for the Festa di SS. Salvatore, in Palermo for Festa di Santa Rosalia or in Catania for Festa di Sant’Agata. Read more [...]

The custom, handed down from one generation to the next, has been enriched over time by innumerable variations. The legends tells that a farmer, in his way to Matera, took a young lady in his cart. Near the town, she got out of the cart and asked the peasant to tell the Bishop that she was the mother of Christ. When he heard that, the Bishop, along with the clergy and the townspeople, rushed to welcome the Virgin, but they found a statue in her place. The statue of the Madonna was brought to the city on a decorated triumphal chariot. Today, the statue of the Madonna is located in the transept of the Matera Cathedral. A prestigious jury judges the boats and rewards the most beautiful and original ones. The feast was initiated in the 60s by Giovanni Magnelli, with the help of the local Tourism Bureau. Today, the event is organized by the Municipality of Sestri Levante and the Lega Navale (Naval League).   BARCAROLATA 2019 will take place on Sunday, July 28, starting around 9.30 pm.
