Between 402 and 493, Brescia suffered numerous barbarian invasions, including those of the Visigoths of Alaric, the Huns of Attila, the Heruli of Odoacre and the Ostrogoths of Theodoric. In 568, the city became an important duchy of the Lombard Kingdom.
In the 12th century, Brescia proclaimed itself an independent municipality, then it came under the Visconti domination, and on November 24, 1426, became part of the Republic of Venice, where it remained until 1797. The city of Brescia is nicknamed Leonessa d'Italia (Lioness of Italy) for the ten days of resistance to the Austrians from 1849, during the Italian Risorgimento (Italian Unification).
