During the 5th century AD, the Lombards built a castle in Malcesine, on the same rock on which the Scaligero Castle stands today. The castle was destroyed in 590 by the Franks, but it was later rebuilt. After an attack by the Hungarians, the castle became the property of the Bishop of Verona.
Between 1277 and 1387, Malcesine was ruled by the Della Scala family. Over the next centuries, the town was dominated in turn by the Visconti of Milan, until 1403, and by the Republic of Venice, between 1405 and 1797. At the end of the 18th century, the area was occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte, after which it was ceded to the Austrian Empire. In 1866, Malcesine became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
