    Roma Summer Fest 2023 will take place during the months of June, July, August and September, 2023, in the beautiful city of Rome. All the concerts of the festival will be held in the beautiful Cavea amphitheater, the main venue of the Auditorium Parco della Musica.   THE FESTIVAL Roma Summer Fest is a summer music festival produced by the Musica per Roma Foundation in a unique venue – the Auditorium Parco della Musica, designed by the great architect Renzo Piano. Many important Italian and international artists performed at the previous editions of the festival, such as Elton John, Sting, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Paolo Conte, José Carreras, Patti Smith, Arctic Monkeys, Simple Minds, Ringo Starr, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, Steven Tyler, Sting and Shaggy. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Roma Summer Fest was postponed to 2021, and then rescheduled to 2022.     Milano Summer Festival 2023

    Milano Summer Festival 2023 will be held during the months of June and July, 2023, at the San Siro Racetrack (Ippodromo Snai – San Siro), in Milan.   THE FESTIVAL Milano Summer Festival brings to Milan some of the best-known artists of different music genres, spanning from rock to electronic dance music, jazz, blues, heavy metal and more. In 2018, the most important artists who performed on the stage of the festival were Marilyn Manson, Carlos Santana, Martin Garrix, Iron Maiden, Alice in Chains, The Chemical Brothers, Alanis Morissette, and Robert Plant. The Transit of Saint Anthony (Transito di Sant’Antonio) is both a religious ceremony and a historical reenactment dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, held every year on June 12, in Padua, on the eve of the Feast of Saint Anthony, recalling his last moments on earth.   SHORT HISTORY Born in 1195 in Lisbon, Saint Anthony was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. He is known for his powerful preaching and for his devotion to the poor and sick. In 1231, at the age of 35, sick and aware of his approaching death, Saint Anthony asked to be taken from Camposampiero, a town located about 20 kilometers north of Padua, to his beloved city, where he wanted to be buried. He was taken to Padua in an ox-drawn cart, and once he arrived on the outskirts of the city, in a place called Arcella, his condition deteriorated and he was hospitalized at the Franciscan convent of Santa Maria de’ Cella. Luminara of Saint Rainerius is a candlelight festival dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Each year, approximately 100,000 candles placed on wooden frames outline the architectural forms of the palaces, bridges, churches and towers located on the banks of the Arno River.     Giostra di San Donato 2023, the first act of Giostra del Saracino 2023, held in honour of Saint Donatus, will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Piazza Grande, in Arezzo. Giostra del Saracino (Saracen Joust) is one of the most important historical reenactment events in Italy, held twice a year in Arezzo. Giostra di San Donato, dedicated to Saint Donatus, the patron saint of Arezzo, is held in the penultimate Saturday of June, during the evening, while Giostra della Madonna del Conforto, dedicated to Our Lady of Comfort, protector of the city, takes place in the first Sunday of September, during the day. The Saracen Joust is a competition between the four Quarters of the city: Porta Crucifera, Porta del Foro, Porta Sant’Andrea and Porta Santo Spirito. Palio of Saint Rainerius (San Ranieri), also known as the Regatta of Saint Rainerius, is actually a rowing race held every year on June 17, along the Arno River, in honor of the patron saint of Pisa.   SHORT HISTORY The first information about a regatta in Pisa dates back to the year 1292, when a palio was held in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Gioco del Ponte (Battle of the Bridge) is a historical reenactment event held every year on the last Saturday of June, in Pisa.   SHORT HISTORY The Battle of the Bridge has its roots in an ancient violent game called Mazzascudo, held on the day of Sant’Antonio Abate, on January 17. On this occasion, the citizens of the city, divided into two factions, fought with clubs and shields in the current Piazza dei Cavalieri. The game was banned by the Florentines after the occupation of Pisa, in 1407. Over the centuries, the game was repeatedly revived and interrupted, undergoing progressive changes to its original formula. At a certain time, the Florentines invented a dispute that was placed on Ponte di Mezzo, with the clubs and shields being replaced by a wooden board called targone.     Festa della Madonna della Bruna 2023 will take place on Sunday, July 2, 2023, in the beautiful city of Matera. The event, popularly known as Festa della Bruna, is a religious feast held every year since 1389, in honor of the Madonna della Bruna, the patron saint of Matera. The 2023 edition will be the 633 edition of the festival.   SHORT HISTORY The origins of the feast are lost in time. The custom, handed down from one generation to another, was enriched over time by countless variations. According to legend, a farmer, in his way to Matera, took a young lady in his cart. On the outskirts of the city, in the Piccianello district, she got off the cart and asked the peasant to tell the bishop of Matera that she was the Mother of Christ. When he heard that, the bishop, along with the clergy and the townspeople, rushed to welcome the Madonna, but they found a statue in her place.     Palio di Provenzano 2023, the first act of Palio di Siena 2023, held in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano, will take place on Sunday, July 2, 2023, in Siena. Palio di Siena is a historical reenactment event held twice a year in Siena – Palio di Provenzano on July 2, dedicated to the Madonna of Provenzano, and Palio dell’Assunta on August 16, in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Palio di Siena is practically a horse race between the 17 contrade (districts or wards) of the city, held in the shell-shaped square Piazza del Campo. The race is preceded by the Corteo Storico (Historical Procession), a parade of about 700 people dressed in medieval costumes.     Festa di Santa Rosalia 2023 will take place from Monday, July 10, to Saturday, July 15, 2023, in the beautiful city of Palermo. The religious feast, one of the most important in Sicily, was officially recognized as an intangible heritage of Italy by the Central Institute for Demo-Ethno-Anthropology (Istituto Centrale per la Demo-Etno-Antropologia). The feast is dedicated to Saint Rosalia, also called La Santuzza (Little Saint) or Rusulia (in Sicilian dialect), the patron saint of Palermo, and it commemorates the miraculous appearances of the Saint from 1624, when the city was hit by plague. To strengthen the defence of Lucca, Genoa sent a certain number of crossbowmen. In a relatively short time, the local soldiers became experts in handling the crossbow. In the 14th century, Castruccio Castracani delli Antelminelli, Lord of Lucca, introduced a prize to reward the strongest crossbowmen of the city. Festa della Rificolona (Festival of the Paper Lanterns) is an event from the Florentine popular folklore, held every year on September 7, on the eve of the Nativity of Mary. On this occasion, young people of Florence wind along the streets of the city, carrying around colored paper lanterns.   SHORT HISTORY The origins of the festival date back to the middle of the 17th century, and is due to the arrival in the city of many peasants from the nearby countryside to celebrate the Nativity of the Madonna in the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata. The farmers also came to Florence to sell their products at the fair held on September 8 in the square in front of the basilica. To arrive on time, they left their homes before the break of dawn, and lit their way with lanterns of various shapes hanging on rods.     Festa della Madonna di Romania 2023 will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in the beautiful town of Tropea.   SHORT HISTORY According to legend, a boat coming from the Eastern Roman Empire, with a painting of Virgin Mary, was driven by a storm into the port of Tropea. After repairing the boat, the captain tried to leave, but the ship did not move. On the same night, the bishop of the town dreamed of the Virgin Mary asking him to remain in Tropea, and the dream repeated for several nights. Eventually, the bishop took the painting from the boat, the ship departed, and the Madonna of Romania became the protector of Tropea. In 1638, the Madonna warned another bishop of Tropea in a dream that an earthquake would follow. On March 27, the bishop initiated a procession in her honor, and the town was spared by the earthquake.     Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2023 will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in Reggio Calabria. Festa della Madonna della Consolazione (Feast of Our Lady of Consolation), also known as Festa di Santa Maria Madre della Consolazione, is the main religious celebration in Reggio Calabria, held every year in the second Saturday of September.   SHORT HISTORY In 1532, the Capuchin friars moved to the current Basilica of the Hermitage (Basilica dell’Eremo), where at the time there was a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Consolazione, with a small effigy of the Virgin inside. After he saw the new church of the convent, the noble Camillo Diano commissioned the painter Nicolò Andrea Capriolo for a new canvas, larger in size. The painting, made by Capriolo in 1547, has a size of 129.5 centimeters in width and 135 centimeters in height. It depicts the Virgin seated on a throne holding baby Jesus, between Saint Francis and Saint Anthony of Padua. Above, two angels crown the Virgin. Luminara di Santa Croce is a religious feast held on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated every year on September 14. In Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates the Cross itself, as an instrument of salvation. On this occasion, the buildings of Lucca are decorated with thousands of candles, a tradition now common only in Lucca and Pisa, for Luminara di San Ranieri.   SHORT HISTORY The origins of the feast in Lucca are lost in time. The first mention of the date of September 14 appears in a document of 1118. On this day, Lucca celebrates the Holy Face (Volto Santo), a wooden crucifix measuring 2.24 x 2.65 meters, kept in a chapel built in 1482 by Matteo Civitali, in the Cathedral of San Martino. San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) is the patron saint of Naples, and the feast held every year on September 19, commemorating his martyrdom, is the most important religious celebration of the city.   SHORT HISTORY Saint Januarius, also known as Januarius I of Benevento, was Bishop of Benevento in the 3rd century AD. Acording to tradition, he was martyred in Miseno on September 19, 305, during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian. The cult of San Gennaro started long before his sanctification, which took place only in 1586. The devotion to the saint is closely linked to the cult of his relics, kept in a crypt of the Cathedral of Naples. The relics consist of two ampoules, one empty, and the other with his blood collected by devotees on the day of his beheading.     Festa di Sant’Eustachio 2023 will take place on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, in the beautiful city of Matera. The Feast of Saint Eustace is a religious celebration which takes place twice a year in Matera, on May 20 and on September 20, to celebrate the patron saint of the town, Saint Eustace. The feast on September 20 is preceded by a Novena (a period of 9 consecutive days), during which religious services take place and marriage vows are renewed on the occasion of the 25th and 50th anniversaries.   THE SAINT Saint Eustace was a Christian martyr and soldier saint, who lived in the 2nd century AD. Prior to his conversion to Christianity, Eustace was a Roman general named Placidus, who served the emperor Trajan. While hunting a stag in Tivoli, near Rome, Placidus saw a vision of a crucifix between the stag’s antlers, and he immediately converted to Christianity and changed his name to Eustace. In 994, Matera was occupied by the Saracens, the people invoked the saint and the town was freed from the invaders.
