In 1815, Joachim Murat, King of Naples and brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, was held prisoner in the Aragonese Castle and later sentenced to death. After several days of imprisonment and a trial in the main hall of the castle, he was shot on October 13, 1815, and buried in the Church of San Giorgio.
GEOGRAPHY: Today, Pizzo, also known as Pizzo Calabro or U Pìzzu in Calabrese, is a town of about 9,000 inhabitants in the province of Vibo Valentia, in the Calabria region. The town is located about 28 kilometers from Tropea, 32 kilometers from Lamezia Terme, 83 kilometers away from Scilla and about 105 kilometers from Reggio Calabria.
TRANSPORT: You can get to Pizzo by plane, arriving at the Lamezia Terme Sant’Eufemia International Airport, located about 27 kilometers north.
