HISTORY OF CALABRIA:

After the fall of the Roman Empire, in the 5th century, Calabria was occupied in turn by the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and, later, by the Lombards. In the 11th century, Calabria passed under Norman domination, and was included at the end of the century in the Kingdom of Sicily, where it remained until the 18th century.
On August 19, 1860, Calabria was invaded from Sicily by Giuseppe Garibaldi, as part of the Expedition of the Thousand. In 1861, together with the rest of the Kingdom of Naples, the region was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy.

The toe of the boot of Italy, as Calabria is known, has three mountain ranges – Pollino, in the north, La Sila, along the central part of the region, and Aspromonte, in the south. The highest peak is Montalto, with 1,995 meters, which is part of the Aspromonte mountain range.
In western Calabria is found the Coast of the Gods (Costa degli Dei), a scenic section of the Tyrrhenian Sea coastline, which begins in the north, before Pizzo Calabro, and ends in the south, after Nicotera. The most beautiful town on the Coast of the Gods is, without doubt, Tropea.
Calabria is subdivided into 5 provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. The capital city is Catanzaro, the largest city is Reggio Calabria, and the most important cities are Lamezia Terme, Cosenza, Crotone, Corigliano Calabro and Vibo Valentia.
Other exciting towns known for their beautiful beaches are Scilla, Pizzo, Bagnara and Palmi.
