The concert celebrates 50 years since the band’s formation in 1977, with Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams leading the current touring line-up. The performance is organised by D’Alessandro e Galli and forms part of an extensive European tour beginning in Dublin on June 16, 2027.

    Toto

Toto is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1977. The original line-up brought together keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, guitarist Steve Lukather, bassist David Hungate, keyboardist Steve Porcaro, and vocalist Bobby Kimball, all musicians with considerable experience in the American recording industry.

The founding members first assembled on January 7, 1977, at Davlen Studios in North Hollywood to record demonstration material for their debut album. Several musicians had previously collaborated on recordings for other artists, including Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, and Sonny & Cher.

Their musical approach combined rock, pop, soul, funk, jazz, and progressive influences, creating a sound distinguished by sophisticated instrumental arrangements and carefully constructed vocal harmonies. The musicians’ experience in recording studios contributed to the precision of their performances and the elaborate production techniques used throughout their catalogue.

An important characteristic of the band’s music is the interaction between electric guitar and keyboards, supported by rhythm sections incorporating rock, funk, and jazz elements. Different members contributed as songwriters and vocalists, allowing the group to explore several musical directions without depending exclusively on a single lead singer.

The group’s history includes numerous personnel changes. Jeff Porcaro died in 1992 and was succeeded by Simon Phillips, while Mike Porcaro, who had joined on bass in 1982, died in 2015. Bobby Kimball, Fergie Frederiksen, and Joseph Williams have all served as principal vocalists during different periods.

Following periods of inactivity, Toto resumed international touring under the leadership of Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams. Founding keyboardist David Paich remains associated with the group, although he no longer participates regularly in its touring activities. Lukather is the only founding member who continues to perform consistently with the current formation.

The announced 2027 touring line-up includes Steve Lukather on guitar and vocals, Joseph Williams on lead vocals, Warren Ham on horns, percussion and vocals, John Pierce on bass, Keith Carlock on drums, and Dennis Atlas and Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboards and vocals.

    Toto Discography

The band’s recording catalogue includes 14 studio albums, alongside live recordings, compilations, and a film soundtrack. Its self-titled debut, Toto, was released by Columbia Records on October 10, 1978. The album reached number nine on the Billboard 200 and established the group’s presence on American radio.

The debut featured Hold the Line, I’ll Supply the Love, and Georgy Porgy. The first became a major international success, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Its combination of prominent piano chords, a strong guitar riff, and Bobby Kimball’s vocals introduced the band’s distinctive musical approach.

The second studio album, Hydra, followed in October 1979. Its compositions included 99, St. George and the Dragon, and White Sister. The record incorporated more progressive rock influences than its predecessor, with extended instrumental passages and complex arrangements contributing to its musical character.

In January 1981, the group released Turn Back, featuring Goodbye Elenore, Live for Today, and English Eyes. The album emphasised guitar-driven rock and was less commercially successful in the United States than the first two releases, although it performed relatively well in Japan.

The band’s fourth album, Toto IV, appeared on April 1, 1982, and became its most successful international recording. It reached number four on the Billboard 200 and included several compositions that established the group’s worldwide popularity, combining polished production with rock, pop, soul, and jazz influences.

Among its most recognisable songs, Rosanna reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, while Africa reached number one in February 1983. The album also featured I Won’t Hold You Back and Make Believe, demonstrating the band’s ability to combine melodic songwriting with sophisticated instrumental arrangements.

The fifth studio album, Isolation, was released in October 1984, introducing Fergie Frederiksen as the principal lead vocalist. Its recordings included Stranger in Town, Holyanna, and Endless. The album adopted a more pronounced hard rock sound while retaining the keyboard arrangements associated with the group’s earlier work.

In August 1986, Toto released Fahrenheit, featuring Joseph Williams as lead singer. The record included I’ll Be Over You, Without Your Love, and Till the End. Michael McDonald contributed backing vocals to I’ll Be Over You, while saxophonist David Sanborn appeared on Somewhere Tonight.

The album The Seventh One, released in February 1988, contained Pamela, Stop Loving You, and Home of the Brave. Although its American chart performance was relatively modest, the record achieved significant success in several European countries, particularly the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

Following further personnel changes, Kingdom of Desire appeared in September 1992. The album featured Don’t Chain My Heart, Only You, and The Other Side. Steve Lukather handled most of the lead vocals, while the musical arrangements placed greater emphasis on guitar-oriented rock.

Toto subsequently released Tambu in 1995, featuring I Will Remember, The Turning Point, and If You Belong to Me. Its recording sessions involved drummer Simon Phillips, who had joined following Jeff Porcaro’s death. The album achieved stronger commercial results in Europe and Japan than in the United States.

The next studio album, Mindfields, appeared in 1999 and marked Bobby Kimball’s return to the group. It included Melanie, Cruel, and Mad About You. The album continued the group’s combination of melodic rock and complex instrumental arrangements, with several members contributing to songwriting and production.

In 2002, Toto released Through the Looking Glass, an album featuring interpretations of songs originally recorded by other artists. Its repertoire included Could You Be Loved by Bob Marley, While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles, and Sunshine of Your Love by Cream.

The album Falling in Between followed in February 2006, featuring Bottom of Your Soul, King of the World, and the title track. The recordings incorporated progressive rock and jazz-fusion influences, while keyboardist Greg Phillinganes contributed to the group’s expanding instrumental arrangements.

After another extended interval, Toto XIV was released in March 2015, becoming the band’s first studio album of original material in nine years. It included Orphan, Burn, Chinatown, and Holy War. The album performed particularly well in several European markets.

The fourteenth studio album, Old Is New, appeared in November 2018 as part of the All In box set. It combined previously unreleased recordings with newly completed material, including contributions from former members. The album was subsequently issued separately, completing the band’s studio discography.

In addition to its regular albums, Toto recorded the soundtrack for David Lynch’s 1984 film Dune. Its live releases include Absolutely Live (1993), Livefields (1999), Falling in Between Live (2007), and 40 Tours Around the Sun (2019), documenting performances from different stages of its career.

    Toto Awards and Sales

Toto has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, becoming one of the most commercially successful American rock groups associated with the late 1970s and 1980s. Its recordings have received gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications across several countries, reflecting the band’s substantial international audience.

The group’s greatest award success came at the 1983 Grammy Awards, when the Toto IV project received six awards across different categories and credited contributors. Three Grammy wins are attributed directly to Toto by the Recording Academy: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Producer of the Year.

The additional awards associated with the album recognised engineering and arrangements, including Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical, and two arrangement categories. These distinctions reflected the technical achievements of the musicians, producers, engineers, and arrangers involved in the recording.

In 2009, Toto was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, acknowledging the group’s musical accomplishments and the extensive session work performed by its members. Their individual contributions to recordings by other artists form an important part of their professional history.

The band’s catalogue has continued achieving substantial commercial results through digital streaming. Africa has been certified Diamond in the United States, while Hold the Line has achieved triple-platinum status and Rosanna double-platinum certification. The group’s recordings attract more than one billion streams annually across digital platforms.

Parco della Musica di Milano 2027

Parco della Musica di Milano 2027 represents the third edition of the summer concert series established in 2025. The event is organised in Segrate, near Milan, and consists of individually ticketed concerts scheduled on separate dates rather than a continuous programme concentrated into a single weekend.

The venue was inaugurated on June 18, 2025, with a performance by Massive Attack. The inaugural programme also featured Nine Inch Nails, Ozuna, Kool & The Gang, De La Soul, Willie Peyote, The Who, and The Smashing Pumpkins, establishing a varied musical programme from the beginning.

The second edition took place in 2026, featuring performers including Halsey, Garbage, Pixies, Lorde, Bad Omens, The Flaming Lips, and Caparezza. Its calendar extended into September, accommodating international touring schedules and a wide selection of musical genres within the seasonal venue.

An important characteristic of the event is its adaptable concert infrastructure. Stage configurations and audience areas are organised according to the requirements of individual performances, while the complex’s proximity to public transport allows visitors to travel from central Milan without relying exclusively on private cars.

The 2027 programme includes The Chemical Brothers on June 17, Marilyn Manson on June 29, and Lynyrd Skynyrd on July 5, alongside the July 21 performance. The concert series consequently presents electronic music, industrial rock, Southern rock, and melodic rock within the same seasonal programme.
