In the 4th century BC, the region passed under the domination of the Roman Republic and later, around the turn of the millennium, became part of the Roman Empire.
During the Middle Ages, Campania was under Byzantine and Norman domination. Under the Normans, the region was included in the Kingdom of Sicily and, starting with the 14th century, it become part of the Kingdom of Naples.
In the following centuries, Naples and the entire Campania were under French, Spanish and Austrian domination. After the Congress of Vienna of 1815, Campania was included, along with Sicily, in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In 1861, the region became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Campania has a population of almost 6,000,000 people and an area of about 13,500 square kilometers, being the most densely populated region of Italy.
The region is divided into five provinces: Naples, Benevento, Avellino, Caserta and Salerno.
With about 1,000,000 inhabitants, Naples is the capital of the region, and the main cities are Salerno, Giugliano in Campania, Torre del Greco, Pozzuoli, Casoria, Caserta and Castellammare di Stabia.
Campania also includes the Phlegraean Islands (Ischia, Procida, Vivara and Nisida), and the island of Capri. Other towns worth visiting are the ones located on the Amalfi Coast (Amalfi, Positano, Praiano, Atrani and Ravello), and the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

In Campania, you can travel by train, but the options are somewhat limited. From Naples to Salerno, you can use the national railway line. The ticket costs 5.10€ and the trip takes almost an hour. To get to Sorrento or Pompeii by train, you must use the local private company Circumvesuviana.
To visit the islands of Capri, Procida or Ischia, you can use one of the ferry services available in Naples, Pozzuoli or Sorrento.
To get to the beautiful Amalfi Coast, you must use the Unico Campania buses. A bus ticket from Naples to Amalfi costs 5.60€ and a ticket from Sorrento to Amalfi costs 3.10€.
Of course, you can also rent a car to see the Amalfi Coast, but be aware, the road along the coast is narrow and the parking is limited.
