    Sting

Sting, born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and actor. He developed an interest in music during childhood and subsequently studied at Northern Counties College of Education, preparing for a career as a teacher.

Before becoming internationally famous, he performed with several groups in northeastern England, including Last Exit, a jazz-rock band formed in Newcastle. His stage name originated from a black-and-yellow striped sweater he frequently wore during performances, which reminded fellow musicians of a bee.

In 1977, Sting moved to London and formed The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland. Guitarist Andy Summers subsequently completed the band’s best-known line-up, replacing original guitarist Henry Padovani. The group combined rock, punk, reggae, and new wave influences, developing a distinctive sound during the late 1970s.

The Police released five studio albums between 1978 and 1983, beginning with Outlandos d’Amour and concluding with Synchronicity. Their most successful recordings included Roxanne, Message in a Bottle, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, and Every Breath You Take.

After the group’s initial separation in 1984, Sting concentrated on his solo career, collaborating with musicians from jazz, rock, and other genres. His musical approach incorporated increasingly diverse influences, including classical music, folk traditions, and world music, while retaining the melodic songwriting associated with his earlier recordings.

Beyond music, Sting has appeared in films including Quadrophenia (1979), Dune (1984), and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). He has also supported numerous humanitarian and environmental initiatives, including the Rainforest Foundation, which he established with Trudie Styler in 1989 to support Indigenous communities and rainforest protection.

    Sting Discography

Sting’s solo discography includes 15 studio albums released between 1985 and 2021, alongside live recordings, compilations, soundtrack projects, and collaborations. His debut solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, appeared on June 17, 1985, introducing a musical direction that incorporated substantial jazz influences.

The album included If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fortress Around Your Heart, and Russians. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 and featured musicians including Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Omar Hakim, and Darryl Jones. Its recording sessions were subsequently documented in the film Bring On the Night.

His second studio album, …Nothing Like the Sun, was released in October 1987. It included Englishman in New York, Fragile, We’ll Be Together, and They Dance Alone. The record reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and incorporated jazz, pop, rock, and Latin American musical elements.

In 1991, Sting released The Soul Cages, an album influenced by the death of his father and memories of his childhood in northeastern England. Its principal songs included All This Time, Mad About You, and The Soul Cages. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom and Germany.

The fourth studio album, Ten Summoner’s Tales, appeared in March 1993 and became one of his most commercially successful releases. Recorded primarily at Lake House in Wiltshire, England, it included Fields of Gold, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You, Shape of My Heart, and Seven Days.

His next album, Mercury Falling, was released in 1996, featuring Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot, You Still Touch Me, and I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying. The album combined pop and rock compositions with elements of country, soul, and folk music, continuing the stylistic diversity of his earlier recordings.

A further commercial success arrived with Brand New Day in September 1999. The album included Desert Rose, featuring Algerian singer Cheb Mami, and the title track Brand New Day. The record reached the top positions of several European album charts and was certified triple platinum in the United States.

The album Sacred Love followed in 2003, featuring Send Your Love and Whenever I Say Your Name, a duet with Mary J. Blige. The record incorporated electronic production and contemporary pop influences, alongside traditional instrumentation and vocal arrangements associated with his previous solo projects.

In 2006, Sting released Songs from the Labyrinth, a collection of music associated with Renaissance composer John Dowland. Recorded with Bosnian lutenist Edin Karamazov, the project represented a departure from mainstream pop and rock, featuring performances accompanied by the lute and spoken passages from historical writings.

The subsequent albums If on a Winter’s Night… (2009) and Symphonicities (2010) continued his exploration of different musical traditions. The former included seasonal songs and traditional compositions, while the latter presented orchestral arrangements of previously recorded material, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

In 2013, Sting released The Last Ship, a concept album influenced by the shipbuilding industry of his native Tyneside. Its songs provided the foundation for a stage musical of the same name, which premiered in Chicago in 2014 before opening on Broadway later that year.

His twelfth studio album, 57th & 9th, appeared in November 2016, returning to a more guitar-oriented rock sound. Its principal singles included I Can’t Stop Thinking About You and One Fine Day. The album’s title refers to a Manhattan intersection that Sting regularly crossed while travelling to the recording studio.

In April 2018, Sting collaborated with Jamaican musician Shaggy on 44/876, an album combining reggae, pop, and Caribbean influences. The following year, he released My Songs, featuring newly recorded interpretations of compositions from his solo career and his years with The Police.

His fifteenth studio album, The Bridge, was released in November 2021, featuring If It’s Love, Rushing Water, and For Her Love. The album was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic and incorporated multiple musical influences, including rock, jazz, classical music, and folk.

The Sting 3.0 Tour subsequently inspired the single I Wrote Your Name (Upon My Heart), released in 2024. The live album Sting 3.0 Live, issued on April 25, 2025, documents performances from the tour and includes material originally recorded during different periods of his career.

    Sting Awards and Sales

Across his solo career and his work with The Police, Sting has sold approximately 100 million albums worldwide. He has received numerous gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications, while his recordings have appeared on international charts across several decades, establishing him as one of Britain’s most commercially successful musicians.

His principal musical distinctions include 17 Grammy Awards, comprising six associated with The Police and eleven for his subsequent work. Among his Grammy-winning recordings are The Soul Cages, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You, Brand New Day, and the collaborative album 44/876.

Additional honours include four Brit Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award, and four Academy Award nominations for original songs. In 2003, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in recognition of his contributions to music.

Sting was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Police in 2003. He has also received the Kennedy Center Honors, the Polar Music Prize, and the Billboard Century Award, recognising his long-term influence on international popular music.

Venue – Cavea, Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone

The concert will take place in the Cavea, the open-air performance area situated within the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone. The complex occupies Viale Pietro de Coubertin 30, north of central Rome, between the Flaminio district, the Olympic Village, and the Parioli neighbourhood.

Named after Italian composer Luciano Berio, the Cavea serves both as an outdoor amphitheatre and as a public square. Its architectural configuration consists of a semicircular audience area, with a lower paved section connected to the surrounding foyers and an elevated section formed by rows of tiered seating.

The amphitheatre is paved with travertine, a traditional building material widely used throughout Rome. It can accommodate 3,737 spectators in a seated configuration or 5,128 when standing arrangements are introduced. Its design takes advantage of a natural height difference of approximately ten metres between the lower and upper levels.

The wider Auditorium was designed by architect Renzo Piano and his architectural practice, Renzo Piano Building Workshop. In 1993, the Municipality of Rome organised an international competition for a new cultural complex. Piano’s proposal was selected on July 27, 1994, and the municipal project formally began in January 1995.

Construction encountered an unexpected archaeological discovery in November 1995, when excavations revealed the remains of an ancient Roman villa. Rather than removing the archaeological structures, the architects modified the original project to incorporate the remains into the development, preserving evidence of the area’s historical occupation.

The completed complex combines three enclosed concert halls with the central outdoor space. The buildings are arranged around the Cavea, which hosts concerts, public events, and film festival activities. This permanent architectural setting allows large summer performances to take place within an established cultural institution rather than a temporary festival ground.

How to Get to Cavea, Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone

On foot: One of the nearest railway stops is Euclide, on the urban railway connecting the Parioli area with Piazzale Flaminio. The station is approximately 650 metres from the Auditorium, with a walking time of around ten minutes. Visitors can follow the streets towards Viale Pietro de Coubertin.

By bus: Several public transport routes serve the Auditorium area, including 53, 168, 910, and 982. Travelling by taxi may be convenient for passengers arriving from central Rome or Roma Termini, particularly when public transport connections involve transfers. Roma Summer Fest 2027

Roma Summer Fest 2027 is an international concert festival organised by Fondazione Musica per Roma at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone. The event developed under its present name in 2018, expanding the Auditorium’s summer programme into a season featuring internationally recognised performers across several musical genres.

The inaugural edition opened on May 26, 2018, with Arctic Monkeys, who performed two consecutive concerts in the Cavea. The festival established a format based on individual performances distributed throughout the summer, rather than a short programme of concerts concentrated within a single weekend.

Over successive editions, Roma Summer Fest has presented rock, pop, jazz, electronic music, and singer-songwriter performances, featuring Italian and international artists. Its programming uses the Auditorium’s established infrastructure, allowing large outdoor concerts to operate alongside the cultural institution’s other musical and artistic activities.

The 2027 edition is officially scheduled from June 8 to September 12. The extended programme will include concerts on separate dates throughout the summer, accommodating different international touring schedules. Early announcements feature performers including Hayley Williams, Take That, Tokio Hotel, and Beth Hart, with further events expected to expand the programme.

The upcoming edition also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Auditorium Parco della Musica. This milestone provides an additional historical context for the festival, connecting its international concert programme with a cultural complex that has played an important role in Rome’s contemporary performing arts since 2002.
