    Archimedes in Syracuse is an exhibition dedicated to Archimedes and presented in Syracuse between May 26, 2018, and December 31, 2019. The visitors will have the unique opportunity to get to know one of the most brilliant figures of the entire history of humanity and, thanks to the most advanced multimedia applications, to plunge into the city of Syracuse in the third century BC. Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, inventor, engineer and astronomer, who lived in Syracuse in the 3rd century BC. He is regarded as one of the leading scientists and mathematicians in antiquity. The exhibition is hosted in the former Church – and today, Gallery – of Montevergini, in a spacious environment equipped with 16 video projectors, for a 360-degree multimedia view, which leads the visitor into a real journey through time. A spectacular and philologically accurate reconstruction shows some of the symbolic buildings which made Syracuse one of the most important centers of the Mediterranean also from an artistic and cultural point of view.     Matera – The European Capital of Culture 2019

    Matera will be the European Capital of Culture in 2019, together with Plovdiv, in Bulgaria. After Genoa, the European Capital of Culture in 2004, Matera is the next Italian city to host the event, under the motto Open Future. Candidate in 2008, Matera was designated on October 17, 2014, the European Capital of Culture for 2019. It is the first city in the southern Italy to receive this recognition, obtained after entering a shortlist that included five other Italian cities: Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena. The octave of the feast will take place next Friday, on December 20. Saint Lucia, the patron saint of Syracuse, is celebrated on two occasions. The feast on December 13 and 20 commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint, while the Feast of Saint Lucia of the Quails, held on two consecutive Sundays in May, recalls the miracle occured in 1646, when the city passed through a serious famine. Saint Lucia was a martyr who died during the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian and his persecution of Christians.     Cavalcata dei Magi 2020, the religious tradition that recreates the pilgrimage of the three Wise Men for the birth of Jesus, will take place on the occasion of the Epiphany, on January 6, in Florence. Epiphany is the feast that celebrates the revelation of the Incarnation of God as Jesus Christ, and the visit of the Magi to the Child.   SHORT HISTORY The Cavalcade of the Magi already existed as a tradition in the 15th century, when a company of laymen known as the Santi Re Magi (Holy Magi Kings) organized a festive procession through the streets of Florence. Initially, the procession was held every three years and, after 1447, every five years. The cavalcade comprised of three groups of people, who met in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and marched together to the Basilica of San Marco, where they sang hymns and prayers dedicated to the Christ Child. The Medici were also members of this company, which was prohibited after their exil from Florence, in 1494.     Festa di Sant’Agata 2020, one of the most important religious festivals in Sicily, will take place between February 3 and 5, in Catania. The feast is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Agatha, who was martyred around the year 251 AD, during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Decius. Saint Agatha is celebrated in Catania twice a year – the feast held in February commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint, while the Summer Feast of Saint Agatha, held on 17 August, celebrates the return of her remains to Catania, after 86 years in which the relics were kept in Constantinople. In February, around one million people come from all over Sicily to attend the feast, which is comparable with the Holy Week in Seville, Spain, or the Feast of Corpus Domini in Cuzco, Peru.     The Venetian Feast on Water (Festa Veneziana sull’acqua), the grand opening of the Carnival of Venice 2020, will take place on two consecutive days, 8 and 9 February 2020, in Venice. Saturday, February 8, on the first day of the feast, the Cannaregio Canal will turn into a water stage, on which an impressive show of music, color and light will take place, for the enjoyment of thousands of people, locals and tourists alike. The show will consist of aquatic performances, acrobatics, dance and music, celebrating, first of all, the water on which the city is built. On the second day of the feast – Sunday, February 9, the Venetian Feast on Water will continue with its second part. Starting at 11.00 am, a water parade will take place on the Grand Canal.     Festa di San Corrado 2020, one of the most beautiful Sicilian religious celebrations, will take place on February 19, in Noto. The feast, dedicated to Saint Conrad of Piacenza, patron saint of the town of Noto, takes place twice a year, or if we count the octaves of the feast, four times a year. The one held on February 19 recalls the death of the Saint, while the one held in the last Sunday of August commemorates his beatification on August 28, 1515. Conrad of Piacenza, born Corrado Confalonieri, was an Italian hermit of the Third Order of Saint Francis, who lived between 1290 and 1351, and is now venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Around the year 1340, the Saint arrived in Noto and settled in a cave.     Best Mask Contest 2020

    The Best Mask Contest is a masks competition that takes place every year in Venice during the Carnival of Venice. For the Venice Carnival 2020, the competition will be held between 20 and 22 February, with the grand final on Sunday, February 23, when the winners will be selected. Between 20 and 22 February, the competitors parade on stage will be held twice a day in the Saint Mark’s Square. The participants will challenge each other by masks and costumes, wigs, feathers and caps. On February 23, the grand final will be held on the same stage, when a jury composed of experts will select the 2 winners of the two categories: Best Masked Costume and Best Masked Costume according to the theme of the Venice Carnival 2020. On the final selection, will appear all the participants that have won the previous parades. On Monday, February 24, there will be two parades dedicated to kids. The participation in the competition is free and, if you want to compete in the Best Mask Contest 2020, you will have to fill out a form that will be available starting with December 2019 on the official website of the Carnival.

    The Procession of the Apostles 2020, one of the most interesting traditions in Campania, will take place on April 9, on the day of the Holy Thursday, on the island of Procida. The religious manifestation is held, as usual, one day before the Good Friday and the Procession of the Mysteries.     Infiorata di Noto 2020, the 41st edition of the famous flower festival, will most likely take place in the weekend of May 15-17, in Via Corrado Nicolaci, in Noto.   SHORT HISTORY The Infiorata was born 40 years ago from the meeting of the Noto artists with the ones from Genzano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, where this pictorial technique was developed. Beginning with 1980, every year, in the third weekend of May, Noto, the Stone Garden, as it was called by the historian Cesare Brandi, welcomes in the heart of its historical center an explosion of color and perfume. On this occasion, Via Nicolaci, 122 meters long and 7 meters wide, is divided into 16 sectors of 6 by 4 meters, that represent the canvas on which the artists will carefully paint with flowers. Considered pioneers of electronic music, Kraftwerk was among the first successful acts to popularize the genre. During the 1970s, the band released some commercially successful albums like Autobahn in 1974, Trans-Europe Express in 1977 and The Man-Machine in 1978. Following the release of Electric Café in 1986, member Wolfgang Flür left the group, and the band’s other longtime percussionist, Karl Bartos, did the same in 1990. Founding member Florian Schneider departed in 2008. In 2014, the band was rewarded with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Their latest album, 3-D The Catalogue, was released in 2017, and won the Grammy Award for the Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2018.   THE VENUE Gran Teatro Geox is a covered space in Padua, inaugurated on November 7, 2009, dedicated to live shows, located near the Arena Live Ex Foro Boario.     The Pisan June (Giugno Pisano) is a series of events that take place every year during the month of June, in Pisa, whose climax is represented by the celebrations held in honor of the patron saint of the city, San Ranieri (Saint Rainerius), on June 17th.
