    Archimedes in Syracuse

    Archimedes in Syracuse is an exhibition dedicated to Archimedes and presented in Syracuse between May 26, 2018, and December 31, 2019. The visitors will have the unique opportunity to get to know one of the most brilliant figures of the entire history of humanity and, thanks to the most advanced multimedia applications, to plunge into the city of Syracuse in the third century BC. Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, inventor, engineer and astronomer, who lived in Syracuse in the 3rd century BC. He is regarded as one of the leading scientists and mathematicians in antiquity. The exhibition is hosted in the former Church – and today, Gallery – of Montevergini, in a spacious environment equipped with 16 video projectors, for a 360-degree multimedia view, which leads the visitor into a real journey through time.     Matera – The European Capital of Culture 2019

    Matera will be the European Capital of Culture in 2019, together with Plovdiv, in Bulgaria. After Genoa, the European Capital of Culture in 2004, Matera is the next Italian city to host the event, under the motto Open Future. Candidate in 2008, Matera was designated on October 17, 2014, the European Capital of Culture for 2019. It is the first city in the southern Italy to receive this recognition, obtained after entering a shortlist that included five other Italian cities: Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena.     Biennale Arte 2019

    The Venice International Art Exhibition, often called simply the Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), is one of the oldest, most important and prestigious international art exhibitions in the world.   SHORT HISTORY The Venice Biennale was born in 1895, in order to stimulate the artistic activity and the art market in Venice, from the initiative of a group of Venetian intellectuals led by the mayor of the time, Riccardo Selvatico, who, with the resolution of April 19, 1893, proposed to set up a biennial national artistic exhibition. The first editions were held in the Palazzo Pro Arte, then in the Italian Pavilion, and now in the Central Pavilion, near the Giardini della Biennale, in the Castello district.     Palio di San Rufino 2019

    Palio di San Rufino is a historical reenactment event held every year in Assisi on the last Sunday of August and the previous three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Palio di San Rufino is a crossbow shooting competition between the three historical districts (terzieri) of the city: San Francesco, San Rufino and Santa Maria. The Palio, a banner painted by a renowned artist, is awarded to the winning team, while the crossbowman who gets the highest score in the single-shot competition receives the Balestrina d’Argento (the Silver Crossbow). The festival begins with the opening of a thematic exhibition, the theatrical performance and the historical market of San Rufino, which recalls the traditional town fair that took place during the days of the celebration of the patron saint of the city, San Rufino. Today, the market exhibits characteristic crafts and antiques along a route that goes from Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, through via Arco dei Priori, Volta Pinta, to Piazza del Comune.     Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo 2019

    Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo (Cavalcade of Saint Orontius) is a religious feast held every year between 25 and 27 of August, in Ostuni. The procession, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Orontius, is the most important festival in Ostuni. The feast dates back to 1657. The procession was born as a way of showing gratitude to the saint who saved Ostuni from the plague, when it swept through Apulia. Since then, it has been an annual rite. On this occasion, knights on horses parades through the city streets towards the Cathedral of Ostuni, in honor of the protector of the city. Once in the Piazza Beato Giovanni Paolo II, they wait for the statue of the saint, which is then carried on shoulders throughout the city.   CAVALCATA DI SANT’ORONZO 2019 will take place, as usual, on the days of August 25, 26 and 27.     Venice Film Festival 2019

    The 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival, also known as Biennale Cinema, will take place between August 28 and September 7, 2019, on the Lido island, in Venice. The Venice International Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the most prestigious, alongside the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.   SHORT HISTORY The festival was held for the first time in 1932, as part of the 18th Venice Biennale, and became an annual event starting with 1935.     Milano Rocks 2019

    Milano Rocks is a music festival which will take place on the last weekend of August, in 2019, at the AREA EXPO Experience, in Milan. The first edition of the festival took place in 2018, with a lineup which included names like Franz Ferdinand, Imagine Dragons, The National, Thirty Seconds To Mars and many more. This year, until now, the following artists were announced: Friday, August 30: the English indie rock band Florence + The Machine will share the stage with the English pop rock band The 1975; Saturday, August 31: the American duo Twenty One Pilots will perform along the American singer Billie Eilish.   THE VENUE AREA EXPO Experience is a park built in the area of Expo 2015, in Milan, inaugurated 6 months after the conclusion of the universal exhibition.     Giostra del Saracino (Saracen Joust) is one of the most important historical reenactment festivals in Italy, held twice a year in Arezzo. The festival takes place on the penultimate Saturday in June, during the evening, dedicated to San Donato, patron saint of Arezzo, under the name of Giostra di San Donato, and on the first Sunday of September, during the day, dedicated to Our Lady of Comfort, protector of Arezzo, under the name of Giostra della Madonna del Conforto.     Regata Storica (Historical Regatta) is both a historical reenactment and a sporting event taking place every year on the first Sunday of September, in Venice. The Historical Regatta is a celebration loved by the locals and tourists alike, and the most important event of the Voga alla Veneta (Row like a Venetian) calendar.   SHORT HISTORY The nature of the Venetian Lagoon encouraged rowing since the appearance of the first people in the area, who were forced to move mainly on water. It did not took long until the skills of the locals were recognized, and from here to the organization of rowing competitions it was only one step. Every year, Regata Storica begins with an impressive procession that commemorates the triumphal reception in Venice of Catherine Cornaro, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Cyprus.     Luminara di Santa Croce is a religious festival held every year in Lucca on the evening of September 13, in the form of a candlelit procession unfolded on the beautiful streets of the city. The procession takes place on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated each year on September 14. In the Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates the cross itself, as an instrument of salvation. On this occasion, the buildings are decorated with thousands of candles and the traditional mottettone, a polyphonic choral and instrumental composition, is performed. This tradition is now common only in Lucca and Pisa, for the Luminara di San Ranieri.     Festa di Sant’Eustachio 2019

    Festa di Sant’Eustachio is a religious feast taking place every year on September 20, in Matera, to celebrate the patron saint of the city, Saint Eustace.   THE SAINT Saint Eustace was a Christian martyr and soldier saint, who lived in the 2nd century AD. Prior to his conversion to Christianity, Eustace was a Roman general named Placidus, who served the emperor Trajan. While hunting a stag in Tivoli, near Rome, Placidus saw a vision of a crucifix between the stag’s antlers, and he immediately converted to Christianity and changed his name to Eustace. In 994, Matera was occupied by the Saracens, the people invoked the Saint and the town was freed from the invaders. Since then, Saint Eustace became the patron saint of the town.   FESTA DI SANT’EUSTACHIO 2019 will take place on Friday, September 20.     Festa della Madonna della Salute, commonly known as Festa della Salute, is a religious celebration taking place every year on November 21, in Venice. The feast, dedicated in particular to the locals and less known by tourists, has a strong religious character, taking the form of a pilgrimage which starts from San Marco, from the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio, and ends in Dorsoduro, at the Church of Santa Maria della Salute, crossing the Grand Canal on a votive bridge specially built on boats for this occasion.   SHORT HISTORY Festa della Salute, like many local holidays, commemorates a painful moment in Venice’s history – the epidemic from 1630-1631.     Festa di Santa Lucia 2019, the religious celebration dedicated to Saint Lucia of Syracuse, will take place on Friday, December 13, in Syracuse. The octave of the feast will take place next Friday, on December 20. Saint Lucia, the patron saint of Syracuse, is celebrated on two occasions. The feast on December 13 and 20 commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint, while the Feast of Saint Lucia of the Quails, held on two consecutive Sundays in May, recalls the miracle occured in 1646, when the city passed through a serious famine. Saint Lucia was a martyr who died during the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian and his persecution of Christians.     Festa di Santa Lucia 2019, the religious celebration dedicated to Saint Lucia of Syracuse, will take place on Friday, December 13, in Syracuse. The octave of the feast will take place next Friday, on December 20. Saint Lucia, the patron saint of Syracuse, is celebrated on two occasions. The feast on December 13 and 20 commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint, while the Feast of Saint Lucia of the Quails, held on two consecutive Sundays in May, recalls the miracle occured in 1646, when the city passed through a serious famine. Initially, the procession was held every three years and, after 1447, every five years.     Festa di Sant’Agata 2020, one of the most important religious festivals in Sicily, will take place between February 3 and 5, in Catania.     The Venetian Feast on Water (Festa Veneziana sull’acqua), the grand opening of the Carnival of Venice 2020, will take place on two consecutive days, 8 and 9 February 2020, in Venice. Saturday, February 8, on the first day of the feast, the Cannaregio Canal will turn into a water stage, on which an impressive show of music, color and light will take place, for the enjoyment of thousands of people, locals and tourists alike.     Festa di San Corrado 2020, one of the most beautiful Sicilian religious celebrations, will take place on February 19, in Noto. The feast, dedicated to Saint Conrad of Piacenza, patron saint of the town of Noto, takes place twice a year, or if we count the octaves of the feast, four times a year. The one held on February 19 recalls the death of the Saint, while the one held in the last Sunday of August commemorates his beatification on August 28, 1515. Conrad of Piacenza, born Corrado Confalonieri, was an Italian hermit of the Third Order of Saint Francis, who lived between 1290 and 1351, and is now venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.     The Best Mask Contest is a masks competition that takes place every year in Venice during the Carnival of Venice. For the Venice Carnival 2020, the competition will be held between 20 and 22 February, with the grand final on Sunday, February 23, when the winners will be selected. Between 20 and 22 February, the competitors parade on stage will be held twice a day in the Saint Mark’s Square. The participants will challenge each other by masks and costumes, wigs, feathers and caps. On February 23, the grand final will be held on the same stage, when a jury composed of experts will select the 2 winners of the two categories: Best Masked Costume and Best Masked Costume according to the theme of the Venice Carnival 2020. On the final selection, will appear all the participants that have won the previous parades. On Monday, February 24, there will be two parades dedicated to kids.     Infiorata di Noto 2020, the 41st edition of the famous flower festival, will most likely take place in the weekend of May 15-17, in Via Corrado Nicolaci, in Noto.   SHORT HISTORY The Infiorata was born 40 years ago from the meeting of the Noto artists with the ones from Genzano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, where this pictorial technique was developed. Beginning with 1980, every year, in the third weekend of May, Noto, the Stone Garden, as it was called by the historian Cesare Brandi, welcomes in the heart of its historical center an explosion of color and perfume.     Festa di Santa Rosalia 2020, one of the most important religious events in Sicily, will take place on July 15, in Palermo. The feast is dedicated to Saint Rosalia, also known as La Santuzza (Little Saint), the patron saint of Palermo, and it commemorates the miraculous appearances of the Saint from 1624, when Palermo was hit by plague.   SHORT HISTORY In 1624, Emanuel Filibert of Savoy, the Viceroy of Sicily, who resided in the city, brought to the port of Palermo a ship from Tunis, containing many gifts. The captain of the ship, Muhammad Calavà, and a part of the crew, were suspected of being sick. Shortly after, the disease, carried by rats, spread rapidly throughout the city. A 47-year-old woman, Girolama La Gattuta, suffering of strong fever at the Hospital of Palermo, had an angel vision. The angel told her to go to the Mount Pellegrino and pray. Three days later, Girolama recovered miraculously without going to Mount Pellegrino, but she fell ill again on May 7, 1624, when the plague hit the city.     Festa del Redentore 2020, one of the most important events in the Venetian calendar, will take place in the weekend of July 18-19, in Venice. The event, held every year in the third weekend of July, was at first a purely religious feast. Over time, profane elements were added to the religious manifestations, and today the celebration includes a party, a regatta and one of the most impressive fireworks display in the world.   SHORT HISTORY Between 1575 and 1577, a merciless plague killed about one-third of Venice’s population. In 1576, the Venetian Senate commissioned a church dedicated to Jesus the Redeemer (Il Redentore), hoping to get rid of the disease. A year later, in July, the city was declared cured, and the Venetians initiated a new celebration called Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer). Today, on the occasion of the feast, a bridge is built across the Giudecca Canal, between Zattere and the Giudecca Island.
