The city is situated about 20 kilometers northeast of Pisa, 72 kilometers west of Florence, 100 kilometers nortwest of Siena, and 130 kilometers southwest of Bologna.
SHORT HISTORY OF THE LUCCA SUMMER FESTIVAL
Since its debut in 1998, the festival has grown into an international musical celebration. It features a wide range of genres and performances by both world-famous artists and local talents.
The first edition of the festival was held in 1998, when Bob Dylan, George Benson and Joe Cocker attended the event.
In 1999, Elton John, Backstreet Boys and Pat Metheny performed on stage.
In 2000, the most important artists performing at the festival were Joe Cocker, Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, Ray Charles, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, and Lionel Richie.
In 2001, the headliners were The Eagles, George Benson and Neil Young.
The 2002 edition of the Lucca Summer Festival welcomed the performances of Jamiroquai, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Rod Stewart and Oasis.
In 2003, Elton John performed again, together with Alanis Morissette, Simply Red, and Diana Krall.
In 2004, the lineup of the festival included The Black Eyed Peas, Michael Bublé, Dido, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel and Pink.
On the stage of the Lucca Summer Festival 2005 performed George Benson, Lauryn Hill, Jamiroquai, Youssou N’Dour, and James Brown.
For the 2006 edition of the festival, were invited Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Santana, Massive Attack, Placebo and Simply Red.
In 2007, the most important names performing at the event were John Legend, Elton John, Dionne Warwick, Norah Jones, Ricky Martin, George Michael, and Joss Stone.
In 2008, Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Ennio Morricone, Alicia Keys, and Leonard Cohen attended the festival.
On July 5, 2009, the Dave Matthews Band held a concert of over three and a half hours, the longest performance of their career.
Between 2010 and 2016, important artists performed at the festival, such as Joe Cocker, B.B. King, Tom Petty, Bryan Adams, Nick Cave, The Prodigy, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, and Tom Jones.
On September 23, 2017, the historic Rolling Stones concert was held, which established the attendance record for this event, of about 55,000 people.
In 2018, the Lucca Summer Festival received the visit of Gorillaz, Lenny Kravitz, Gianni Morandi and Norah Jones, and in 2019 of Take That, Sting, Scorpions, and Tears for Fears.
Due the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 edition of the festival was postponed first to 2021, and then to 2022.
The lineup for the Lucca Summer Festival 2022 featured artists such as Liam Gallagher, Kasabian, John Legend, Robert Plant, Ben Harper, and Justin Bieber.
In 2023, artists like KISS, Simply Red, Bob Dylan, Placebo, Norah Jones, Lil Nas X, The Chemical Brothers, and Robbie Williams performed on the stage of the festival.
In 2024, at the festival were invited artists such as Ed Sheeran, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rod Stewart, Lenny Kravitz, Sam Smith and Diana Krall.

THE VENUES OF THE LUCCA SUMMER FESTIVAL 2025
The concerts of the Lucca Summer Festival 2025 will be held, as usual, in the historical center of the city.
The main venues of the event will be Piazza Napoleone, Piazza San Martino or Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, and the former Balilla Field (Campo Balilla), located outside the historic walls of Lucca.
The most important venue of the Lucca Summer Festival 2025 will remain Piazza Napoleone, also known as Piazza Grande, the main square of Lucca.
Piazza Napoleone is a large square surrounded by historic buildings. This square, along with other venues, creates an intimate and visually stunning backdrop for concerts.
Piazza Napoleone is located inside the city walls, about 650 meters away from the Lucca railway station, or about 10 minutes on foot.
The former Balilla Field is a former sports field located between Viale Giosuè Carducci and the 16th-century walls of the city. The Lucca railway station is located about 500 meters away.
Sometimes, when the audience is very large, the Porta Elisa soccer stadium in Lucca or the Pini stadium in Viareggio are used.
