    About Thirty Seconds to Mars

Thirty Seconds to Mars was formed in Los Angeles in 1998 by brothers Jared Leto and Shannon Leto, who had played music together since childhood. The project later expanded into a full band, initially adding guitarist Solon Bixler and bassist Matt Wachter before securing recording contracts with Immortal Records and Virgin Records.

The Thirty Seconds to Mars name was selected during the group’s early years and was intended to convey a futuristic, cinematic idea. Jared Leto handled most of the songwriting for the first album, while Thirty Seconds to Mars built experience through club performances and support tours with Puddle of Mudd and Incubus.

Thirty Seconds to Mars released its self-titled debut in 2002. The record introduced a conceptual form of alternative rock shaped by progressive structures, heavy guitars, synthesizers, and science-fiction imagery. It reached number 107 on the Billboard 200 and topped the American Heatseekers chart, establishing the band beyond its initial touring audience.

Guitarist Tomo Miličević joined in 2003 after Solon Bixler’s departure. He subsequently contributed to the albums that defined the band’s international breakthrough. Bassist Matt Wachter left in 2007, while touring musicians later covered bass, guitar, keyboard, and backing-vocal duties as the permanent lineup became progressively smaller.

The release of A Beautiful Lie transformed Thirty Seconds to Mars into an internationally recognized rock act. Extensive touring and the success of its singles expanded the group’s audience across North America and Europe. The album also established the band’s use of short-film music videos, large visual concepts, symbols, and fan participation.

The recording of This Is War coincided with a major contractual conflict between the band and EMI. The label filed a lawsuit seeking $30 million after the group attempted to leave its contract. The dispute was eventually settled, and the recording process became the subject of the 2012 documentary Artifact.

After the tours supporting Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams and America, Miličević officially left the band in 2018. Thirty Seconds to Mars continued as the core duo of Jared and Shannon Leto, supported by touring musicians. For the 2027 A Beautiful Lie vs This Is War dates, Miličević is scheduled to perform with the group again.

Thirty Seconds to Mars is generally classified as alternative rock, although its catalogue incorporates progressive rock, hard rock, electronic music, synth rock, and arena-oriented pop. Jared Leto performs lead vocals and multiple instruments, while Shannon Leto plays drums and percussion. Large choruses and audience participation remain recurring features of their concerts.

    Thirty Seconds to Mars Discography

The Thirty Seconds to Mars discography contains six studio albums, alongside extended plays, live releases, singles, music videos, and soundtrack appearances. Its studio catalogue begins with 30 Seconds to Mars in 2002 and currently ends with It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day, released in 2023.

The debut album 30 Seconds to Mars was released in the United States on August 27, 2002. Produced by Bob Ezrin and Brian Virtue, it was conceived around themes of human struggle and self-determination. Its principal singles were Capricorn (A Brand New Name) and the atmospheric Edge of the Earth.

Although the debut achieved limited initial commercial success, it developed steadily after release. The album eventually sold approximately two million copies worldwide. Its dense arrangements, conceptual lyrics, and electronic textures differ from the more direct alternative-rock approach heard on the next Thirty Seconds to Mars album, but established several long-term musical characteristics.

A Beautiful Lie followed on August 30, 2005, with Josh Abraham as producer. The material became more personal and direct while retaining conceptual elements. Its singles included Attack, The Kill, From Yesterday, and the title track, all supported by videos that strengthened the band’s visual identity.

The Kill peaked at number three on the US Modern Rock chart and remained on that chart for more than 50 weeks. From Yesterday became the band’s first number-one single on the same ranking. These results made A Beautiful Lie the record that moved the group into mainstream international rock.

The third studio album, This Is War, was released on December 8, 2009. Produced with Flood and Steve Lillywhite, it expanded the sound through progressive rock, synthesizers, choirs, and experimental arrangements. Fans contributed voices, percussion, and photographs through the international project known as the Summit.

Kings and Queens and This Is War both reached number one on the US Alternative Songs chart. Closer to the Edge became a major European single, while Hurricane also appeared in a version featuring Kanye West. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number 18 and reached the Top 10 in several countries.

Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams arrived on May 21, 2013. Produced by Jared Leto with Steve Lillywhite, it used orchestral, electronic, and minimalist elements within a four-part thematic structure. Its main singles included Up in the Air, Do or Die, and City of Angels, with the album reaching number six in the United States.

The first physical copy of Up in the Air was carried into space aboard the SpaceX CRS-2 mission in March 2013. The song later premiered from the International Space Station. This promotional project connected the group’s established space-related imagery with an actual orbital launch, rather than a conventional studio campaign.

America, the fifth album, was released on April 6, 2018, through Interscope Records. It introduced a stronger pop and electronic direction and produced the singles Walk on Water, Dangerous Night, and Rescue Me. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, the band’s highest position on that chart.

Thirty Seconds to Mars released It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day on September 15, 2023, through Concord Records. The album was created by Jared and Shannon Leto and included the singles Stuck, Seasons, Get Up Kid, and World on Fire, emphasizing concise pop-rock songwriting and electronic production.

The wider catalogue also includes the 2011 MTV Unplugged EP, which featured rearranged versions of the band’s songs and a cover of U2’s Where the Streets Have No Name. However, the 2027 Assago concert is specifically built around the two-album period represented by A Beautiful Lie and This Is War.

Thirty Seconds to Mars Awards and Sales

By 2014, Thirty Seconds to Mars had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. The figure reflects the international reach of the first four studio records and the band’s extensive touring activity. Later releases added further chart entries, streaming audiences, festival appearances, and arena tours across Europe, the Americas, and other markets.

The self-titled debut eventually reached approximately two million worldwide sales. A Beautiful Lie exceeded four million copies and obtained platinum or gold certifications in several countries, including platinum status in the United States. The Kill was later certified double platinum in the United States and platinum in the United Kingdom.

This Is War also sold approximately four million copies worldwide. It received gold certification in the United States and multiple gold or platinum awards across European and international markets. Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams reached the Top 10 in numerous countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Australia.

Thirty Seconds to Mars won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Rock in 2007, 2008, and 2010. At the 2008 ceremony, it also received Best Video for A Beautiful Lie. The Kill won the MTV2 Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, while Kings and Queens won Best Rock Video in 2010.

Thirty Seconds to Mars also received consecutive Kerrang! Awards for Best Single: The Kill won in 2007, followed by From Yesterday in 2008. The documentary Artifact, which examined the EMI dispute and the making of This Is War, received the People’s Choice Documentary Award at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Into the Wild Tour established a Guinness World Record for the most concerts during a single album cycle. The band completed 300 shows connected with This Is War, with the record-setting performance taking place at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on December 7, 2011, before a final series of special concerts.

    Venue – Unipol Forum

The Unipol Forum is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Assago, southwest of central Milan. Completed in 1990, the building was designed for major sporting competitions, concerts, and entertainment productions. Its adaptable central arena has hosted basketball, ice hockey, tennis, skating, international tournaments, family shows, and large touring productions.

The project received the 1994 European Architecture Award for Sporting Venues from CONI and the Council of Europe. The complex contains more than 40,000 square metres of covered space and approximately 450,000 cubic metres of volume, with its main arena arranged across three levels.

The venue can accommodate up to 15,800 spectators, depending on the layout used for a particular event. A frequently cited seated configuration provides approximately 12,700 places. Corporate hospitality areas include SkyPoint and SkyBox spaces, while the wider complex also contains facilities dedicated to fitness, ice sports, swimming, squash, and bowling.

Music has been central to the Forum’s programme since its early years. Frank Sinatra performed there in 1991, and the arena later welcomed major Italian and international artists, including U2, Madonna, and Vasco Rossi. Thirty Seconds to Mars will use a venue designed for large indoor concert productions.

How to Get to the Unipol Forum

The most direct public-transport option is Milan Metro Line M2, identified by the green colour. Passengers should board a train whose destination is Assago Milanofiori Forum, because the southern section of M2 divides into separate branches. The arena is approximately 450 metres from the terminal station.

The journey from Cadorna FN to Assago Milanofiori Forum covers seven metro stops. Line M2 also serves major interchange points including Milano Centrale, Garibaldi FS, Porta Genova FS, and Romolo, making the route practical for visitors arriving by intercity train or from different parts of Milan.

A ticket valid for the Mi1-Mi3 fare zones is required to reach Assago from Milan. ATM also permits contactless payment at the metro gates. Concertgoers should check the official ATM application or website on the event date, because additional late-evening departures are sometimes arranged for major events at the Forum.

Drivers can reach the arena from the A7 Milan–Genoa motorway or Milan’s Tangenziale Ovest, using the Assago-Milanofiori exit. The official address is Via Giuseppe Di Vittorio 6, 20057 Assago. Traffic commonly increases before major concerts, so public transport provides the simplest connection from central Milan.
