Simply Red will perform on Saturday, July 1, 2023, starting with 9.30 pm, in Piazza Napoleone, in Lucca, as part of the Lucca Summer Festival 2023.
Besides the concert scheduled in Lucca, the band will also appear on stage in Trani on June 27, in Macerata on June 28, in Marostica on July 3, and in Nichelino on July 4.
THE BAND
Simply Red was formed in Manchester in 1985. Led by the vocalist Mick Hucknall, the band released their debut album, Picture Book, in the same year.
Men and Women was released in 1987, A New Flame in 1989, Stars in 1991, Life in 1995, Blue in 1998, Love and the Russian Winter in 1999, Home in 2003, Simplified in 2005 and Stay in 2007.
Simply Red disbanded in 2010, but the band was reformed in 2015 for the 30th anniversary European tour. A new album, Big Love, was released in 2015. The band’s twelfth studio album, Blue Eyed Soul, was released in November 2019.
The current lineup of the band consists of Mick Hucknall (lead vocals), Ian Kirkham (saxophone, keyboards), Steve Lewinson (bass, backing vocals), Kenji Suzuki (guitars, backing vocals), Kevin Robinson (trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion, backing vocals), Dave Clayton (keyboards), and Roman Roth (drums, backing vocals).
Over time, Simply Red had five number one albums in the UK. The band’s 1991 album, Stars, was one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history.
The band received the award for Best British Group at the 1992 and 1993 Brit Awards, and three Grammy Award nominations in 1987 and 1990. To date, Simply Red sold over 50 million albums worldwide.
THE FESTIVAL
The first edition of the Lucca Summer Festival was held in 1998, when Bob Dylan, George Benson and Joe Cocker performed on stage.
Over time, important names performed at the festival, such as David Bowie, James Brown, Mark Knopfler, Jamiroquai, Seal, Zucchero, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Oasis, Anastacia, Giorgia, Green Day, Ennio Morricone and The Rolling Stones.
THE VENUE
Piazza Napoleone is the main square of Lucca, and one of the venues where, every year in the summer, is held one of the most important music festivals in Italy, the Lucca Summer Festival.
Piazza Napoleone is located inside the city walls of Lucca, about 650 meters away from the Lucca railway station. The closest bus stop is Napoleone, located in the northwestern corner of the square, on the bus Lines 5, LAM Blu and LAM Verde.
