    THE BAND

Epica is a symphonic metal band, founded in 2002 by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever over creative differences. Initially, the band was named Sahara Dust, and featured Helena Michaelsen as its frontwoman, replaced shortly after by the then unknown Simone Simons, Jansen’s girlfriend at the time.

The band’s current lineup consists of Mark Jansen (rhythm guitar, growled vocals), Coen Janssen (keyboards, synthesizer, piano), Simone Simons (lead vocals), Ariën van Weesenbeek (drums), Isaac Delahaye (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Rob van der Loo (bass).

At start, a symphonic metal band with gothic tendencies, Epica incorporated later into their sound strong death metal influences. The band is also known for their wide use of orchestra and opera choirs. The use of mezzo-soprano vocals and growled vocals, performed by Simone Simons and Mark Jansen respectively, is also a feature of the band’s sound.

To date, the band released 8 studio albums: The Phantom Agony in 2003, Consign to Oblivion in 2005, The Divine Conspiracy in 2007, Design Your Universe in 2009, Requiem for the Indifferent in 2012, The Quantum Enigma in 2014, The Holographic Principle in 2016, and Omega in 2021.
