THE BAND
Bon Iver was formed in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The current line-up of the band consists of Justin Vernon (vocals, guitar), Sean Carey (drums, keyboards, vocals), Matthew McCaughan (drums, bass, vocals), Andrew Fitzpatrick (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Mike Lewis (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar, violin).
Bon Iver’s debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, was released independently in July, 2007. The album was recorded in a cabin in western Wisconsin, where Vernon spent three months isolated.
In 2011, the band released their eponymous album, Bon Iver, which debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, number four on the UK Albums Chart and peaked inside the top 10 in Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. In 2012, the band won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
After a two-year hiatus, the band released their third album 22, A Million in 2016, to critical acclaim. The album represented a large stylistic shift for the band. Several publications, including Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and The Guardian, listed 22, A Million as one of the best albums of 2016.
Their latest album, I, I, was released in 2019. The album features contributions from James Blake, Aaron Dessner, Bruce Hornsby, Moses Sumney, and Channy Leaneagh, among others. The album was nominated at the 2020 Grammy Awards for Album of the Year.
