Named after Italian composer Luciano Berio, the Cavea has two functions: it serves as a public square within the Auditorium and becomes an open-air amphitheatre for concerts and performances. Its semicircular form places the audience between the three principal indoor concert halls designed around the central space.

The Cavea is built largely from travertine, a stone strongly associated with Roman architecture. Its two-level design follows a natural height difference of approximately ten metres, with a lower paved area and an upper tiered section arranged around the central performance space.

Its configuration can change according to the event. The Cavea accommodates 3,737 people in a fully seated arrangement and up to 5,128 spectators when the lower parterre is used for standing audiences. The entire space is outdoors, including both the parterre and the surrounding tiers.

The Auditorium itself was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop following an international competition organised by the City of Rome in 1993. Renzo Piano’s proposal was selected in July 1994, and the project formally began in January 1995 as a major cultural and urban redevelopment initiative.

Construction produced an important archaeological discovery when the remains of an ancient Roman villa emerged in November 1995. Instead of removing them, the architects modified the project and integrated the archaeological area into the complex, including changes to the orientation and circulation around the Cavea.

Today, the complex accommodates concerts, cinema, theatre, exhibitions, festivals and cultural events throughout the year. Roma Summer Fest 2027

Roma Summer Fest was introduced under its present name in 2018 as the major summer concert programme organised by Fondazione Musica per Roma. The inaugural edition opened with two Arctic Monkeys concerts on May 26 and 27 in the Cavea of the Auditorium Parco della Musica.

Rather than concentrating performances into several consecutive days, the festival operates as an extended summer concert series. Individual concerts are distributed throughout the season, allowing artists on different European tours to perform in Rome while using the Auditorium’s existing spaces and technical infrastructure.

Over subsequent editions, Roma Summer Fest has hosted a broad mixture of Italian and international performers. Recent programmes have included artists representing pop, rock, jazz, electronic music, singer-songwriter traditions and other genres, making stylistic variety one of the recurring characteristics of the festival.
