Festa della Madonna di Romania (The Feast of Our Lady of Romania) is a religious festival held every year on September 9, in Tropea.
The legend tells us that a boat coming from the Eastern Roman Empire, with a picture of Virgin Mary, was driven by a storm into the port of Tropea. After repairing the boat, the captain tried to leave, but the ship did not move.
In the same night, the Bishop of the city dreamed of the Virgin Mary asking him to remain in Tropea, and the dream repeated for several nights. Eventually, the Bishop took the picture from the boat, and the ship departed. The Virgin Mary promised to defend the city from diseases, wars and earthquakes, and, over time, Tropea escaped several dangerous situations thanks to the painting that is preserved in the Cathedral of Tropea.
FESTA DELLA MADONNA DE ROMANIA 2018 will be held on September 9, with the main event being the procession that will accompany the venerated picture of Madonna di Romania through the city streets. The popular participation is very high, the people joining the procession with enthusiasm and devotion, celebrating with hymns and songs.
