Palazzo Rasponi del Sale is a striking example of late-Baroque civil architecture in the historic center of Ravenna.

Erected in the late 18th century, this palace stands close to the city’s central square, Piazza del Popolo, and reflects both the legacy of the influential Rasponi family and the urban transformations that shaped Ravenna during the early modern era.

While lesser known internationally than Ravenna’s UNESCO monuments, Palazzo Rasponi del Sale offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the aristocratic residences that once defined the city’s civic identity.
 

Short History of Palazzo Rasponi del Sale

Palazzo Rasponi del Sale was built around 1770, during a period when Ravenna’s historic center was no longer expanding rapidly and many noble families were facing financial constraints.

The palace likely originated from the initiative of Count Fabrizio Rasponi. His son, Giuseppe Rasponi, married Benedetta del Sale, a union that gave rise to the Rasponi del Sale branch of the family.

Before the palace was constructed, the land it occupies was home to the medieval residence of the Artusini family and may even have contained remains of Roman structures, underlining the long-standing strategic and symbolic value of the site.

During the 19th century, the estate passed out of the Rasponi del Sale family’s hands.

It was repurposed several times, including as the headquarters of the Circolo Ravennate, a bourgeois recreational association founded in 1862, and later housing offices of financial institutions such as the Cassa di Risparmio and Credito Romagnolo.

In the immediate environment of the palace, one of the most notorious episodes of mid-19th-century Ravenna occurred. In 1865, banker Antonio Monghini, a member of the community associated with the building, became the first known victim of the so-called Accoltellatori, a clandestine group involved in political violence and unrest in Romagna.

The façade of Palazzo Rasponi del Sale is characterized by Baroque elements combined with a sense of symmetrical balance that nods to emerging Neoclassical influences of its era.

Ornamented window openings and decorative motifs express the combined heraldry of the Rasponi and del Sale families.

How to Get to Palazzo Rasponi del Sale

Palazzo Rasponi del Sale is located in the heart of Ravenna’s historic center, making it easily reachable from the city’s main transportation hubs.

The nearest major transport hub is Ravenna train station (Ravenna FS). The palace is approximately 850-900 meters (about half a mile) from the station, translating to a 10–12-minute walk through the historic streets that lead toward Piazza del Popolo.

• On Foot: Walking is typically the most recommended option. From the train station, head south onto Via di Roma and continue toward Piazza del Popolo. Along the way, you will pass several cafés, shops, and historic buildings that contribute to the rich urban texture of Ravenna’s center.
• By Bus: Local urban buses serve routes within the city center and usually have stops near Piazza del Popolo or close by. The nearest bus stop is located on Via Guidone, approximately 300 meters from the palace, and is served by Bus Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 18, 70, 80, and 145.
• Taxi or Ride Share: Taxis are available outside Ravenna FS and can deliver you directly to the vicinity of Piazza del Popolo within a few minutes. This is a convenient option if you have luggage or prefer not to walk.
