Infiorata di Noto 2025, the Flower Festival of Sicily

Nestled in the southeastern corner of the island of Sicily, the Baroque town of Noto is renowned for its stunning architecture, for its rich history, and for the flower festival which takes place here every year.

In short, Infiorata di Noto 2025 will take place in Noto, in Via Corrado Nicolaci, a stone’s throw away from the Cathedral of Noto.

Via Corrado Nicolaci is a sloping street with a length of 122 meters, which will turn, during the festival, into a huge floral painting.

On this occasion, the street, which measures 122 meters in lenght and 7 meters in width, is divided into 16 sectors of 6 by 4 meters.

The street represents the canvas on which the artists will carefully paint with flowers, and the resulted floral carpet will cover an area of about 700 square meters.

SHORT HISTORY OF INFIORATA DI NOTO

The tradition originated in the 17th century in Rome. It was a mean to celebrate religious events by adorning church floors with flower petals, creating stunning, ephemeral works of art.

In Noto, the event was born 40 years ago, when the Noto floral artists met the ones from Genzano, part of the Metropolitan City of Rome, where this pictorial technique was developed.

Starting with 1980, every year, in the third weekend of May, Noto, the Stone Garden, as it was called by the historian Cesare Brandi, welcomes in the heart of its historical center an explosion of color and perfume.

INFIORATA DI NOTO, THE FLOWER FESTIVAL

The creation of Infiorata is an intensive process that requires weeks of preparation.

The theme of the festival changes every year, and is usually inspired from religion, mythology, art or local folklore, providing a rich tapestry of stories expressed through the language of flowers.

Months before the festival, artists begin conceptualizing their designs. These designs are then translated into detailed sketches, which serve as blueprints for the floral carpets.

The chosen theme influences the selection of flowers, colors, and the overall composition of the artworks.

The flowers used are carefully selected for their vibrant colors and durability. Commonly used flowers include marigolds, roses, carnations, and petunias, along with colored sand, seeds, and other natural materials to add texture and depth to the designs.

The petals are meticulously separated by hand, ensuring they are in perfect condition for the festival.

The festival kicks off with an opening ceremony, which includes a parade featuring traditional Sicilian costumes, music, and dance – the Baroque Procession.

This vibrant procession sets the tone for the celebrations and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the spirit of the festival.

No Italian event would be complete without a celebration of food, and Infiorata di Noto is no exception.

Local vendors offer a plethora of Sicilian delicacies, from arancini and cannoli to fresh seafood and granita. Visitors can indulge in these culinary delights while enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Given the festival’s roots in religious tradition, several religious ceremonies and processions are held in conjunction with Infiorata.

These events highlight the spiritual significance of the festival and provide a moment of reflection amidst the celebrations.
