Sagra del Pesce 2025 (Fish Festival 2025) will take place on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in the beautiful fishing town of Camogli.

Nestled along the picturesque Ligurian coast, the charming fishing village of Camogli comes alive each year with the vibrant and flavorful Sagra del Pesce.

This annual event, typically held on the second Sunday of May, has become a cornerstone of Camogli’s cultural identity, attracting visitors from near and far to partake in its rich maritime heritage and culinary delights.

SHORT HISTORY OF SAGRA DEL PESCE

    Sagra del Pesce 2025

    Sagra del Pesce 2025

Sagra del Pesce was held for the first time in 1952, to celebrate the patron saint of fishermen, San Fortunato.

Back then, the local artist and sculptor, Giorgio “Getto” Viarengo, sought to honor the town’s fishing traditions and promote community spirit.

Viarengo’s vision was to create a festival that celebrated the sea’s bounty, bringing together residents and visitors in a shared appreciation of Camogli’s maritime culture.

In the early years, the fish was fried in small pans. In 1954, the pans were replaced by a single large pan, which, over time, become the symbol of the festival.

In 1960, a pan of 5 meters in diameter was introduced. The pan was placed on scaffolding built on the seabed of the port, and became one of the main attractions of the town.

Over the years, the festival has grown in scale and popularity, evolving into a significant event that showcases the town’s unique character and hospitality.

One of the most iconic features of Sagra del Pesce is the massive frying pan used to prepare the festival’s signature dish: freshly caught fish fried to perfection.

This colossal pan has become a symbol of the festival, embodying the communal effort and dedication that define Sagra del Pesce.

Since the 1980s, the two large pans used in the first years of the feast are displayed on the wall of Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, near Largo Luigi Simonetti.

    FESTA DI SAN FORTUNATO

Sagra del Pesce is closely linked to the Feast of San Fortunato, the patron saint of fishermen.

The festival’s timing coincides with the religious celebrations dedicated to San Fortunato, adding a spiritual dimension to the event.

On Saturday, May 10, a solemn procession will takes place through the streets of Camogli, culminating in a benediction at the harbor.

In the evening, a spectacular fireworks display will illuminate the sky, accompanied by the burning of elaborate wooden structures on the beach, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and paying homage to the town’s seafaring traditions.

    SAGRA DEL PESCE 2025

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the square that overlooks the small Port of Camogli, Piazza Cristoforo Colombo, will be filled with people waiting to see, to smell and, last but not least, to taste the star of the festival – the fish.

On this day, about 30,000 fish portions will be prepared in a large frying pan made of stainless steel, almost 4 meters in diameter, with a 6-meter handle, weighing about 28 tons, and with a capacity of about 2000 liters.

Local fishermen will supply an abundance of fish, typically including anchovies, sardines, and other small varieties native to the Ligurian Sea.

The fish will be coated in a light batter and fried in the giant pan, then served to festival-goers in paper cones, allowing them to savor the flavors while strolling through the vibrant streets of Camogli.

The sight and aroma of the frying fish create an irresistible allure, drawing crowds to the waterfront to witness the culinary spectacle.

Beyond the culinary delights, Sagra del Pesce 2025 will offer a rich tapestry of cultural activities that reflect Camogli’s heritage.

The festival will feature traditional music performances, folk dances, and art exhibitions, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the town’s history and traditions.

Additionally, local artisans and vendors will set up stalls along the streets, offering handcrafted goods, souvenirs, and regional specialties, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
