About
Festa della Madonna di Romania 2023 will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in the beautiful town of Tropea.
SHORT HISTORY
According to legend, a boat coming from the Eastern Roman Empire, with a painting of Virgin Mary, was driven by a storm into the port of Tropea. After repairing the boat, the captain tried to leave, but the ship did not move.
On the same night, the bishop of the town dreamed of the Virgin Mary asking him to remain in Tropea, and the dream repeated for several nights.
Eventually, the bishop took the painting from the boat, the ship departed, and the Madonna of Romania became the protector of Tropea.
In 1638, the Madonna warned another bishop of Tropea in a dream that an earthquake would follow. On March 27, the bishop initiated a procession in her honor, and the town was spared by the earthquake.
The salvation of the people of Tropea from the plague of 1660, which devastated the regions of Campania and Calabria, is also attributed to the Madonna of Romania.
Another miracle attributed to the saint is more recent, when, during the Second World War, two bombs hit the town, but they did not explode. The bombs are kept in the Cathedral of Tropea, in memory of that miracle.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
The celebrations dedicated to the Madonna of Romania will start on Thursday, September 7, 2023, and will culminate on the evening of Saturday, September 9, with the procession that will accompany the venerated painting of the saint through the streets of the town.
As usual, the popular participation will be very high, and the devotion to the Madonna of Romania will be confirmed again by the countless faithful who will join the procession with enthusiasm, celebrating with hymns and songs.
Around midnight, a fireworks display will close the feast.
