The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker will be put on stage by the Ballet of St. Petersburg Classical Ballet Tradition, on 19th and 20th of January, 2019, in Syracuse, at the Municipal Theater (Teatro Comunale).

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Its original premiere was on 18 December 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.

The costumes and sets were created specifically for the Italian tour, based on the artistic canons of the great Russian Imperial Theater. The scenographies and the choreography respect the technical rules of the classic Marius Petipa production.

The Ballet of St. Petersburg Classical Ballet Tradition is a historic private company founded in St. Petersburg in 1877. The dance corps is made up of 38 dancers from the best dance academies of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa and Perm, as well as winners of numerous international ballet competitions.

THE VENUE

The Municipal Theater of Syracuse is a building located on the Ortigia island. It was inaugurated in 1897 and remained in operation until 1962, when it was closed for renovation. The theater was officially reopened on December 26th, 2016.
