About
Piazza Camillo Prampolini, also known as Piazza del Duomo, is one of the main squares of Reggio Emilia, located in the historical center of the city.
SHORT HISTORY OF PIAZZA CAMILLO PRAMPOLINI
The square was born during the Renaissance period, and was known as Piazza Grande (Large Square), in contrast to Piazza San Prospero, which was called Piazza Piccola (Small Square).
In the 19th century, the square was named after Vittorio Emanuele II, and after 1945 it was unofficially dedicated to the socialist politician Camillo Prampolini.
ARCHITECTURE OF PIAZZA CAMILLO PRAMPOLINI
The most important building in the square, located on its eastern side, is the Cathedral of Reggio Emilia, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.
The Cathedral was built in Romanesque style starting with the 13th century. Its unfinished facade dates back to the 16th century.
To the left of the Cathedral stands the Bishop’s Palace (Palazzo Vescovile) and the Baptistery built during the Middle Ages, which was later renovated and deprived of its main apse.
On the northern side of the square stands Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, from which the Civic Tower (Torre Civica) with the clock rises.

On the opposite side of the square, there is Palazzo del Comune, which houses the beautiful Sala del Tricolore (Hall of the Tricolor).
Palazzo del Comune was built between 1414 and 1417, and was used since then as the headquarters of the Municipality. The facade of the palace was built in 1774 to a design by Ludovico Bolognini.
The western side of the square is occupied by Palazzo delle Notarie, the ancient seat of the college of notaries, and by Palazzo del Podestà.
In the southeastern part of Piazza Camillo Prampolini, we can find Torre del Bordello, now the seat of municipal offices.
In front of Palazzo del Monte di Pietà is a statue dedicated to the Crostolo stream.
