Hosted within the framework of Ferrara Summer Festival, the show reinforces the festival’s growing reputation as a major destination for international rock and metal tours in Europe.

    Megadeth

Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine, Megadeth stands as one of the most influential bands in heavy metal history.

Mustaine founded the band shortly after his departure from Metallica, channeling his musical vision into a new project defined by speed, technical precision, and politically charged lyricism.

Megadeth quickly became part of what is known as the “Big Four” of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax.

Their debut album, Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! (1985), introduced a ferocious sound that pushed the boundaries of metal at the time.

With rapid tempo changes, complex guitar riffs, and biting social commentary, Megadeth distinguished themselves from their peers early on.

The band’s breakthrough came with albums such as Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? (1986), featuring the iconic track Peace Sells, which became a cultural symbol of 1980s metal and was famously used as the theme music for MTV News.

Over more than four decades, Megadeth has released 16 studio albums, many of which are considered cornerstones of thrash metal. Key releases include:

    • Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! (1985)
    • Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? (1986)
    • So Far, So Good… So What! (1988)
    • Rust in Peace (1990)
    • Countdown to Extinction (1992)
    • Youthanasia (1994)
    • Cryptic Writings (1997)
    • The System Has Failed (2004)
    • Endgame (2009)
    • Dystopia (2016)
    • The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! (2022)

Among these, Rust in Peace is widely regarded as one of the greatest metal albums of all time, featuring technically demanding tracks such as Holy Wars… The Punishment Due, Hangar 18, and Tornado of Souls.

Countdown to Extinction marked the band’s commercial peak, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and producing hits like Symphony of Destruction and Sweating Bullets.

Megadeth has sold over 50 million albums worldwide, making them one of the most commercially successful metal bands ever.

Their longevity is matched by critical recognition: after multiple nominations, the band won their first Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Metal Performance with the song Dystopia.

In addition to Grammy recognition, Megadeth has received numerous Metal Hammer and Revolver Golden Gods awards and has been consistently ranked among the greatest metal bands in history by international music publications.

Despite frequent lineup changes over the years, Dave Mustaine has remained the creative core of Megadeth, guiding the band through stylistic evolutions while maintaining their aggressive identity.

By 2026, Megadeth continues to tour globally, delivering intense live performances that balance classic material with newer releases.

Megadeth @ Ferrara Summer Festival 2026

Anthrax, Black Label Society, Cavalera, Gaerea, and Game Over

Formed in 1981 in New York City, Anthrax is another pillar of the Big Four of thrash metal.

Known for blending thrash with hardcore punk influences, the band gained prominence with albums such as Among the Living (1987) and Persistence of Time (1990). Songs like Indians, Caught in a Mosh, and I Am the Law have become staples of the genre.

Anthrax’s inclusion on the same bill as Megadeth offers fans a rare chance to experience two Big Four bands on the same day — a significant moment for thrash metal enthusiasts.

Founded in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Zakk Wylde, longtime collaborator of Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society delivers a blend of heavy metal, southern rock, and groove metal.

Albums such as 1919 Eternal and Mafia have cemented the band’s reputation for crushing riffs and intense live performances.

Cavalera is the project led by Max and Igor Cavalera, former founding members of Sepultura.

The band focuses on revisiting and reinterpreting early Sepultura material, particularly albums like Morbid Visions and Bestial Devastation, delivering raw and aggressive performances rooted in extreme metal history.

Hailing from Portugal, Gaerea represents the modern black metal scene. Known for their anonymous, masked aesthetic and emotionally intense sound, they have gained international recognition with albums such as Limbo and Mirage.

Italy’s own Game Over brings old-school thrash metal energy to the festival.

Formed in 2008, the band draws inspiration from classic 1980s thrash, contributing a local presence to an otherwise international lineup and reinforcing the festival’s connection to the Italian metal scene.

    Ferrara Summer Festival 2026

The Ferrara Summer Festival is a large-scale open-air music event held annually in the UNESCO-listed city of Ferrara, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Since its inception in the early 2020s, the festival has rapidly expanded, hosting major international artists across rock, metal, pop, and electronic music.

The festival was conceived as a way to revitalize Ferrara’s historic public spaces through contemporary music. By placing large stages in iconic squares such as Piazza Ariostea, Ferrara Summer Festival merges centuries-old architecture with modern sound and lighting production.

Each edition spans several weeks, typically from June to July, with individual concert days dedicated to specific genres or headliners.

The 2026 edition continues this trajectory with a diverse lineup featuring international superstars and genre-specific events. The June 14 metal day, headlined by Megadeth, stands out as one of the most ambitious and genre-focused dates of the entire program.

    The Venue – Piazza Ariostea

Originally known as Piazza Nuova and later briefly as Piazza Napoleone, Piazza Ariostea is located in the northern part of Ferrara’s historic center.

Its unique oval-rectangular shape distinguishes it from traditional Italian squares and makes it particularly suitable for large public events.

In 1933, the square was redesigned to include a recessed central area for the Palio di Ferrara, one of Italy’s oldest horse races. This architectural feature not only defines the square visually but also enhances sound dispersion, making it well-suited for concerts.

At the center of the square stands a monumental 16th-century column designed by Ercole Grandi, topped since 1833 by a statue of Ludovico Ariosto, the renowned Italian poet and author of Orlando Furioso.

The monument underscores the square’s cultural and historical importance.

Piazza Ariostea is located approximately 2 kilometers from Ferrara train station, making it easily accessible for visitors arriving by rail.

How to reach Piazza Ariostea from Ferrara train station:

    • On Foot: The walk takes about 25 minutes, passing through residential neighborhoods and parts of Ferrara’s historic urban layout.
    • Public Transport: The nearest bus stop is Porta Mare Ariostea, served by bus lines 3 and 4, which connect the station area directly to the square.
    • Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the train station. The journey to Piazza Ariostea typically takes 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic.
