About
Festa di Santa Maria Madre della Consolazione, commonly known as Festa della Madonna della Consolazione (Feast of Our Lady of Consolation), is the main religious event in Reggio Calabria, held every year in the second Saturday of September.
On this occasion, the patron saint of Reggio Calabria is celebrated, through a splendid procession carrying the Vara with the effigy of the Madonna. The procession is certainly one of the most impressive in Southern Italy, Festa della Madonna della Consolazione being among the most important religious festivals of the country.
Vara is a large framed painting by Nicolo Andrea Caprilo, from 1547, depicting the Virgin seated on a throne, holding the Child in her arms.
The Vara, weighing around 1000 kilograms, is transported by the bearers from the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione, located in the upper part of the city, to the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria. For the last part of the procession, from the beginning of the Piazza del Duomo facing the Cathedral steps, the bearers of the Vara are running under the weight of the immense effigy.
FESTA DELLA MADONNA DELLA CONSOLAZIONE 2018 will take place on September 8, when the city, as usual, will change its appearance, hosting numerous shows, concerts, folk dances and a fun fair.
