Short History of the Palio di San Rufino

The origins of the Palio di San Rufino are deeply embedded in history and, in many respects, are lost in time. The earliest known written reference to this tradition dates back to the 14th century, found in an official document now preserved in the Municipal Library of Città di Castello.

This documentation confirms that celebrations dedicated to Saint Rufinus and competitive events associated with his feast were already part of Assisi’s civic life during the Middle Ages.

The Palio reflects the medieval organization of the city into districts and the importance of martial skills, such as crossbow shooting, both as military training and as ceremonial competition.

Although the form of the celebration has been refined in modern times, its historical inspiration remains faithful to the past, making the Palio di San Rufino one of the most authentic medieval reenactments in Umbria.

    Palio di San Rufino 2026

The Palio di San Rufino 2026 is dedicated to Saint Rufinus of Assisi, recognized as the city’s first bishop and an essential figure in its Christian history.

At the core of the event is a crossbow shooting competition between the three historical districts, or terzieri, of Assisi: San Francesco, San Rufino, and Santa Maria.

Each terziere is represented by skilled crossbowmen belonging to the Compagnia Balestrieri di Assisi, an organization devoted to preserving and promoting historical crossbow traditions. The competition follows strict historical rules and techniques, reinforcing the authenticity of the event.

The ultimate prize of the competition is the Palio, a ceremonial banner painted by a renowned artist specifically for the occasion. This artwork is awarded to the winning team and becomes a symbol of honor and pride for the victorious district.

In addition, the individual crossbowman who achieves the highest score in the single-shot competition is awarded the Silver Crossbow (Balestrina d’Argento), one of the most prestigious individual honors of the festival.

The Palio di San Rufino is not limited to the competition alone. The celebrations begin with the opening of a thematic exhibition, followed by theatrical performances and the San Rufino Historical Market.

Today, the market features traditional crafts, artisanal products, and antiques, arranged along a carefully designed route that passes through Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, Via Arco dei Priori, Volta Pinta, and reaches Piazza del Comune.

In the following days, the Palio continues with the official investiture of the crossbowmen, a solemn ceremony that emphasizes the symbolic and ceremonial value of their role.

The highlight of the festival is the shooting contest between the three district teams, held in a setting charged with historical and emotional significance.
