Braccio Fortebraccio was a condottiero of exceptional talent and ambition. During his career, he held numerous prestigious titles, including Governor of Bologna, Rector of Rome, Lord of Perugia, Prince of Capua, Count of Montone, and Count of Foggia.

His political and military vision brought him very close to establishing a central Italian state in the early 15th century, an achievement that would have significantly altered the balance of power in the peninsula.

The modern festival was born from the desire to symbolically rediscover and celebrate this fruitful and dynamic period of Perugia’s history. The Palio di Perugia 1416 aims to enhance curiosity, historical knowledge, and shared identity, encouraging citizens to reconnect with their past.

The event is conceived as a year-round cultural project, involving associations, districts, and institutions, and culminating in the great popular celebration held every June.

At the heart of Palio di Perugia 1416 2026 lies a competition among the Five Districts (Rioni) of the city: Porta Santa Susanna, Porta Sole, Porta Eburnea, Porta Sant’Angelo, and Porta San Pietro.

These historic districts face each other in a series of challenges designed to test coordination, strength, speed, skill, and historical authenticity, all with the ultimate goal of winning the Palio.

Each year, the Palio itself is selected through a competition launched by the Associazione Perugia1416 and reserved for students of the Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci.

The Palio is therefore a true work of art, created by a young artist who must deeply explore the historical, symbolic, and cultural foundations of the project.

The competition promotes the dissemination of knowledge about the city’s history, its districts, and the values of fair competition and social cohesion.

Students are asked to interpret these elements in a concept that accompanies the artwork, with references to the historical period and to the five districts of Perugia. The winning project is selected by a commission, and the artist receives a cash prize.

The Palio is awarded to the winning district, together with the highly coveted collar bearing the medal of the Perugian Griffin, specially cast for Perugia1416. The collar is passed from year to year to the captain of the winning district, who acts as its custodian for one year.

While the collar circulates, the Palio itself remains permanently with the district that has won it, proudly preserved as a testament to the achieved victory.

Corteo Storico

Corteo Storico, or Historical Parade, is the most spectacular and visually striking event of the entire Palio di Perugia 1416. It is also one of the challenges that the districts must face in their quest to win the Palio.

The parade features hundreds of participants dressed in meticulously crafted medieval costumes, accompanied by musicians, flag throwers, and performers.

Participation in the Grand Parade requires official enrollment in a district and strict adherence to the choreographic and stylistic guidelines established by the event’s regulations.

These rules ensure historical coherence and visual harmony, transforming the streets of Perugia into a living medieval tableau.

In the 2020 and 2021 editions, due to the public health emergency and safety regulations, neither the Grand Historical Parade nor the sporting challenges were held. As a symbolic gesture, the Palio was donated to the city of Perugia and to the economic operators of the historic center.

In 2022, after these difficult years, it was decided that the Corteo Storico would be held as a single, non-scoring event. In 2023, the Historical Parade returned to being evaluated and contributing points toward the final victory, reaffirming its central role within the Palio di Perugia 1416.
 
Tiro Arco Storico

Tiro Arco Storico, or Historical Archery, is a discipline that brings participants and spectators back in time, starting with the use of traditional bows and historically inspired clothing.

Beyond the technical aspect, historical archery is considered a true philosophy, aimed at harmonizing physical ability and mental focus.

With extreme concentration, archers perform the shot while following the flight of the arrow along its trajectory toward the center of the target. This discipline reflects medieval martial traditions and emphasizes discipline, patience, and inner balance.

In this competition, each district participates with three archers, whose combined performance contributes to the overall score. Tiro Arco Storico is one of the most technically demanding challenges of the Palio di Perugia 1416 2026.
 
Mossa alla Torre

The Mossa alla Torre is an original, dynamic, and highly engaging competition, conceived in accordance with social and sporting principles. At the center of the challenge is a specially designed “machine”, the tower, decorated with the symbols of the competing districts.

The districts face each other in pairs, engaging in a contest of physical strength, strategy, and cooperation. The objective is to move the tower in such a way as to secure victory over the opposing team.

The competition is characterized by tactical play, muscular effort, and coordinated teamwork, making it one of the most intense and dramatic moments of the Palio di Perugia 1416 2026.
 
Corsa del Drappo

Corsa del Drappo is a race that combines speed and endurance. The aim is to deliver a baton to the finish point – coinciding with the starting point – before the other teams, accumulating the highest possible number of points.

The race takes place along Corso Vannucci and around the Fontana Maggiore, following a defined route that includes four baton changes per team, one for each lap, for a total of five laps.

This challenge transforms the symbolic and monumental heart of Perugia into a competitive arena, uniting athletic performance with historical celebration.
