Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny was born on August 12, 1954, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He emerged in the mid-1970s as one of the most original voices in jazz guitar, redefining the instrument’s role through a highly melodic, harmonically rich, and emotionally direct approach.

From the beginning of his career, Metheny demonstrated an unusual openness to diverse musical influences, drawing inspiration from jazz tradition, rock, folk, classical music, and world rhythms.

His debut album, Bright Size Life, released when Metheny was just 23 years old, is widely regarded as a landmark in modern jazz.

The album introduced a new guitar sound – clear, singing, and expansive – that broke away from bebop conventions and influenced generations of musicians.

Shortly thereafter, Metheny founded the Pat Metheny Group, which became one of the most successful and innovative ensembles in contemporary jazz history.

The group’s discography includes essential albums such as Pat Metheny Group, American Garage, Offramp, Still Life (Talking), Letter from Home, The Road to You, Imaginary Day, and Speaking of Now.

Iconic compositions like Are You Going with Me?, Last Train Home, Minuano (Six Eight), First Circle, and Phase Dance have become staples of modern jazz repertoire.

Beyond the group format, Metheny has pursued an extraordinarily diverse solo career.

Albums such as Secret Story, One Quiet Night, The Way Up, Orchestrion, Unity Band, Kin (←→), and From This Place showcase his constant drive to explore new compositional forms, technologies, and ensemble concepts.

Udin&Jazz 2026

Udin&Jazz is one of Italy’s most established and respected jazz festivals, organized by the non-profit cultural association Euritmica, founded in Udine in 1997.

Unlike many festivals that compress their identity into a single weekend, Udin&Jazz unfolds across multiple dates throughout July, integrating jazz into the everyday cultural life of the city.

Piazzale del Castello is located approximately 1.3 kilometers from Udine railway station, making it easily accessible for visitors arriving by train.
