Marco Polo International Airport is the main airport of Venice, located about 13 kilometers from the center of the city. The airport is named after the famous Venetian merchant and traveler Marco Polo. The airport terminal has three floors: the ground floor for Arrivals and the second floor for Departures. In 2017, the airport handled over 10 million passengers, making it the fourth busiest airport in Italy. SHORT HISTORY The foundation stone for the new airport of Venice was laid on March 29, 1958. The inauguration of the airport took place on July 31, 1961, and the airport quickly became the reference airport in the Veneto region, to the detriment of the Treviso Airport. In July 2002, a new airport terminal was built, designed to adapt the airport to the continuous increase in air traffic. HOW TO GET THERE From Venice, you can get to the Marco Polo Airport by bus, either with the ACTV Line 5, or with the ATVO Express 35. For both buses, a single ticket costs 8€ and a round trip is 15€. Antonio Canova International Airport
Antonio Canova International Aiport, also known as the Treviso-Sant’Angelo Airport, is an airport located 3 kilometers west of Treviso and 31 kilometers north of Venice. The Treviso Airport can be considered the second airport of Venice, the first being Marco Polo International Airport. The airport has a single terminal divided into the Arrivals area, on the ground floor, and the Departures area, on the first floor, and a single runway completely redone in 2011. SHORT HISTORY Born in 1935 to meet the needs of the Aero Club of Treviso, it obtained the status of a civil airport in 1953, at the initiative of the local authorities. In May of the same year, the first international flight was inaugurated. Until the opening of the Marco Polo Airport, in 1960, the Treviso Airport was the reference airport for the nearby city of Venice. Starting with that year, it became exclusively a stopover for charter and cargo aircrafts. In 1996, the Treviso Airport entered the Venice Airport System, following the collaboration between Save, the manager of the nearby Venetian airport, and the local Aer Tre.
