The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola is a small historic church standing on the homonymous sandstone rock in Tropea, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Together with the cliff, the sea, and the beach below, it forms one of the most recognizable views of the town. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola rises in front of Tropea’s historic center, on a rock once completely surrounded by the sea. This detail explains the name “dell’Isola”, meaning “of the island”. Today, the rock is connected to the mainland, but its isolated position still defines the identity of the monument. Seen from the beaches of Tropea, the church appears above the coastline like a small fortified religious complex. Its position makes it not only a place of worship, but also one of the most photographed landmarks in Calabria. For many visitors, it is the visual symbol of Tropea and the Costa degli Dei.
