    Date: 6 January 2019

Time: 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm

Cavalcata dei Magi (Cavalcade of the Magi) is a religious event celebrated every year in Florence, on the occasion of the Epiphany, that recreates the pilgrimage of the three Wise Men for the birth of Jesus. Epiphany is the feast that celebrates the revelation of the Incarnation of God as Jesus Christ, and the visit of the Magi to the Child. In Italy, the feast of Epiphany is celebrated on January 6.   SHORT HISTORY The Procession of the Magi existed as a tradition in the 15th century, when a company of laymen known as the Santi Re Magi (Holy Magi Kings) organised a festive procession through the streets of Florence. Initially, the Cavalcade of the Magi was held every three years and, after 1447, every five years. The cavalcade comprised of three groups of people, which would meet in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and march together to the Basilica of San Marco, where they would worship the Christ Child with hymns and prayers. The Medici were also members of this company, which was abolished after they were exiled from Florence in 1494. Calcio Storico – Match of the Siege 2019

    Date: 17 February 2019

Time: 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm

Calcio Storico (Historical Soccer) is an early form of football that originated in the 16th century in Italy, a mix of rugby, soccer and wrestling, and which today is disputed only in Florence. The four teams that are facing each other on the field are the Bianchi (White) of Santo Spirito, the Azzurri (Blue) of Santa Croce, the Rossi (Red) of Santa Maria Novella and the Verdi (Green) of San Giovanni. The game, lasting only 50 minutes, is very violent and often ends up with broken limbs and a lot of blood.   SHORT HISTORY The first match of Calcio Storico was played on February 17, 1530, when Florence was besieged by the army of Carlo V and Pope Clemente VII, who were trying to bring the Medici Family back to the city, from their exile. Instead of celebrating the Carnival, the people played a match of Calcio Storico, to make fun of the attackers. The popularity of the game increased and lasted throughout the 17th century, but in the following century it began a slow decline that soon led to the disappearance, at least as an organized event. The last official game was disputed in January 1739, in the Read more [...]

    Explosion of the Cart 2019

    Date: 21 April 2019

The Explosion of the Cart (Scoppio del Carro) is a religious tradition that takes place every year on Easter Sunday, in Florence. The brindellone, a pyrotechnical tower positioned on a cart, is pulled by a pair of oxen on the streets of the historical center of Florence and positioned, in the end, between the Baptistery of Saint John and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. At a certain time, the archbishop lights a dove-shaped rocket from the altar of the cathedral, which, through a cord mechanism, runs through the central nave of the church and reaches the cart outside, causing it to explode.   SHORT HISTORY The ceremony dates back to the distant times of the First Crusade, called to free the city of the Jerusalem in 1099. According to the legend, it was the Florentine Pazzino from the Pazzi family who first climbed the walls of the Holy City where he placed the Christian flag. For this act of valor, Godfrey of Bouillon, one of the leaders of the First Crusade, donated three small pieces from the Holy Sepulcher to him. Returning to Florence, Pazzino was celebrated and welcomed with solemn honors. It seems that, after the liberation Read more [...]
