The basilica stands in Piazza San Zeno, west of the historic center, and is among the clearest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy. The church develops on three main levels: the crypt, the plebeian nave, and the raised presbytery. The present structure preserves several medieval phases, especially from the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 14th centuries. Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is also connected with the former Benedictine abbey that once stood beside it. Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is known for its tuff and brick exterior, sculpted porch, bronze doors, large rose window, crypt, medieval frescoes, and the celebrated altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna.
