Matera hosts numerous cultural and religious events that reflect its deep historical roots and strong community identity. The most important celebration is the Festa della Bruna, held every year on July 2 in honor of the Madonna della Bruna, the city’s patron saint.

This ancient festival blends religious devotion with dramatic rituals, including a solemn procession and the parade of an elaborate papier-mâché float. The event ends with the symbolic destruction of the float and a fireworks display over the Sassi.
