About
Genova City Marathon is a 42 kilometers race that will be held on December 2, 2018, in Genoa, after a 14-year break. The last marathon organized in the Ligurian capital dates back to 2004.
SHORT HISTORY
After the Olympic victory of Dorando Pietri in London, in 1909, a desire for marathon takes shape in Italy. One of the first cities to organize a 40 km race, the official distance at that time, was Voltri, now a district of Genoa.
In Voltri, the marathon was held in 1910, in 1911 and in 1922. The fourth edition will take place only 42 years later, in 1964. After another 20 years, a new edition will be held in 1984, the first Genoese marathon open to women. In the 80s, there were three other marathons, however the number of participants was small.
The race was held again in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2004, under the name of the Sea Marathon, with the participation of strong African athletes. Now, in 2018, after another 14 years of break, the Genova City Marathon returns.
GENOVA CITY MARATHON 2018 will take place on Sunday, December 2, 2018, on the distance of 42 kilometers. The start and finish will be in the old port of Genoa, Porto Antico (Piazzale Mandraccio).
On the same day, a non-competitive 11 kilometers race open to all will be held along the city streets. The race is called Fantozzi Run, in honor of the Genoese actor Paolo Villaggio, who played the beloved comedy character Ugo Fantozzi.
