    Festa della Madonna della Consolazione is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of September, following a tradition that has remained stable for centuries and is deeply rooted in the religious calendar of Reggio Calabria.

    This period of early September has a strong symbolic and practical significance. It marks the transition from summer to autumn, a time traditionally associated with reflection, gratitude, and the resumption of communal life after the agricultural and maritime cycles of the warmer months.

    In 2026, the second Saturday of September falls on September 12, making this the official date of Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026.

    The celebration unfolds throughout the day, beginning in the morning with the solemn procession of the Sacred Effigy and continuing with religious services, moments of prayer, and public participation that extend well into the evening.

    Although the main liturgical focus is concentrated on September 12, the devotion associated with the Madonna della Consolazione traditionally spans several days, culminating in a second major procession during the following week.

    What Is the Location of Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026?

    Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026 will take place in Reggio Calabria, a city that holds a central role in the historical, cultural, and spiritual landscape of southern Italy.

    With approximately 200,000 inhabitants, Reggio Calabria is the largest city in the region of Calabria.

    The municipal territory stretches for about 32 kilometers along the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina, offering panoramic views of Sicily and forming a natural bridge between the Italian peninsula and the island.

    Reggio Calabria’s geographic position has profoundly influenced its history and identity. The city has long been a crossroads of Mediterranean cultures and civilizations, and its strategic location has made it a key center for trade, religion, and cultural exchange throughout the centuries.

    The city is located approximately:

    • 150 kilometers southwest of Catanzaro;
    • 495 kilometers southeast of Naples;
    • 500 kilometers southwest of Bari;
    • 710 kilometers southeast of Rome;
    • 985 kilometers southeast of Florence.

    The main settings of the feast include two of the city’s most important religious landmarks: the Basilica dell’Eremo (Basilica of the Hermitage) and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Cathedral of Reggio Calabria.

    The procession connecting these two sites symbolically unites the upper part of the city with its historic and spiritual heart.

    Short History of Festa della Madonna della Consolazione

    The origins of the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione are closely linked to the presence of the Capuchin friars in Reggio Calabria and to the veneration of a Marian image that would gradually become the spiritual cornerstone of the city.

    In 1532, the Capuchin friars settled in what is now the Basilica dell’Eremo, located in the upper part of Reggio Calabria.

    At that time, the site housed a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Consolazione, inside which was preserved a modest effigy of the Virgin Mary. This early image quickly became an object of devotion for the local population, who sought comfort and protection through prayer.

    Following the construction of the new convent church, the nobleman Camillo Diano recognized the growing importance of the devotion and commissioned a new, larger painting to replace the small original effigy.

    The task was entrusted to the painter Nicolò Andrea Capriolo, an artist active in the mid-16th century.

    In 1547, Capriolo completed the painting that would become one of the most revered Marian images in Calabria. The canvas measures 129.5 centimeters in width and 135 centimeters in height and depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, holding the Child Jesus.

    On either side of the Virgin stand Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Padua, two saints closely associated with the Franciscan tradition. Above them, two angels are shown crowning the Virgin, emphasizing her role as Queen and Consoler of the faithful.

    Over time, the painting was placed within an elaborate wooden structure covered in silver, known as the Vara. This monumental frame, which weighs approximately 1,000 kilograms, transforms the painting into a sacred object of extraordinary visual and symbolic power.

    The first documented procession of the Vara through the streets of Reggio Calabria dates back to 1636, marking the formal beginning of the public celebration that would later evolve into the Festa della Madonna della Consolazione.

    From that moment onward, the annual procession became an essential ritual, reinforcing the bond between the city and its patroness.

    Throughout the centuries, devotion to the Madonna della Consolazione intensified, particularly during times of crisis such as earthquakes, epidemics, and social upheaval.

    The faithful repeatedly turned to the Virgin as a source of comfort and protection, solidifying her role as the spiritual guardian of Reggio Calabria.

    Calendar of Events for Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026

    The Calendar of Events for Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026 follows a traditional sequence of ceremonies and processions that have remained largely unchanged over time, preserving the authenticity and solemnity of the celebration.

    The feast officially begins on the morning of September 12, 2026, with the solemn procession of the Sacred Effigy of the Madonna della Consolazione.

    The Vara, bearing the revered painting, is carried by devoted bearers from the Basilica dell’Eremo, located in the upper part of Reggio Calabria, down to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the city’s cathedral.

    This procession represents one of the most emotionally charged moments of the feast. Along the route, thousands of faithful gather to pray, sing hymns, and express their devotion as the Sacred Effigy passes through the streets.

    One of the most dramatic and iconic moments occurs during the final stretch of the procession. From the beginning of Piazza Duomo, facing the steps of the cathedral, the bearers of the Vara perform a sprint under the immense weight of the structure.

    This powerful gesture, requiring strength, coordination, and devotion, is met with intense emotion from the crowd and represents an offering of sacrifice and faith to the Madonna.

    The Sacred Effigy then remains in the cathedral, where it becomes the focal point of prayers, liturgical celebrations, and individual acts of devotion throughout the following days.

    A second major procession takes place on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. On this occasion, the Vara follows a route through the historic center of Reggio Calabria, allowing different neighborhoods and communities to honor the Madonna della Consolazione.

    Together, these events make Festa della Madonna della Consolazione 2026 one of the most intense and meaningful religious celebrations in southern Italy, combining centuries-old tradition, artistic heritage, and living faith in a unique and deeply moving experience.
