The Carnival of Venice is one of the most beautiful carnivals in the world, taking place every year in January, February or even March, on the islands of the Venetian Lagoon. The Venice Carnival has become, in time, a great and spectacular tourist event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world, who come to the city to participate in this festival considered unique for its history, atmosphere and masks. SHORT HISTORY The first mention of the word carnevale (carnival) is found in a document of the Doge Vitale Faliero, from 1094. The first official document declaring the Carnival of Venice as a public holiday is from 1296, when the Senate of the Republic set it before Lent. Starting with that moment, for the following centuries, the Carnival lasted six weeks, from December 26 to Ash Wednesday. The Official Dinner Show and Ball of the Venice Carnival 2019 is a sumptuous event held every evening between February 23 and March 5, in the beautiful Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, in Venice. Every evening, the guests will be welcomed around 9.00 pm, and they will be accompanied to the main hall for a toast. Later, a placèe dinner with 5 courses will take place. An international cast of dancers, musicians and actors will create a wonderful atmosphere, entertaining the guests. After midnight, the party will be animated by live music and DJ set until 2.30 am. The guests will have access to a cocktail bar. Whoever loves gambling can try his/her luck in the gambling room of the Casino di Venezia. THE VENUE Ca’ Vendramin Calergi is an imposing palace on the Grand Canal, which hosts the oldest casino in the world, Casino di Venezia, established in 1638. The Flight of the Angel (Volo dell’Angelo) is an event included in the Carnival of Venice, in which the beautiful girl who was chosen the previous year as Maria of the Carnival will fly along a cable from the St. Mark’s Campanile to the middle of the St. Mark’s Square. SHORT HISTORY The tradition originated in the 16th century, when a Turkish acrobat descended from the belfry of St. Mark’s Campanile, to the balcony of the Doge’s Palace, paying homage to the Doge. After the success of this performance, it was decided that the moment would be repeated yearly, under the name of Svolo del Turco (The Flight of the Turk). At first, the flight was performed only by professional tightrope walkers. Later, after a man with angel wings descended from the bell tower, the event changed its name in Flight of the Angel. In 1759, when an acrobat fell to the ground among the crowd, the performance was forbidden and the acrobat was replaced by a large wooden dove. Best Mask Contest is a mask competition held every year during the Carnival of Venice. In 2019, the competition will take place between February 24 and March 2, with the final on Sunday, March 3, when the winners will be announced. Starting with 24th of February, the competitors parade on stage will be held twice a day in St. Mark’s Square. The participants will challenge each other by masks and costumes, wigs, feathers and caps. On March 3, the final of the contest will be held in the same place, when a jury composed by experts will proclaim the 2 winners of the two categories – Best Masked Costume and Best Masked Costume according to the theme of the 2019 Carnival edition. On the final selection, will appear all the participants that have won the previous parades. On Monday, March 4, there will be two parades dedicated to kids. The participation is free and, if you want to compete in the Best Mask Contest, you will have to fill out the form that will be available starting with December 2018 on the official website of the Carnival.
